BARONESS HALE OF RICHMOND JOINS BIRMINGHAM LAW SOCIETY ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS

help us celebrate this landmark year in the city of Birmingham’s legal calendar. We have a proud history of world class legal education and legal practice in Birmingham and the sector continues to thrive in the city. Having such a senior member of the judiciary, who has herself had such a remarkable career, to speak at an event which will bring together law students and graduates, legal academics, practising lawyers from a diverse range of practice backgrounds and members of the public, is a fitting way to mark such a special occasion.”

The event follows in the tradition of the lecture given by former Master of the Rolls, Lord Denning to mark the occasion of the Society’s 150th year. A transcript of Baroness Hale’s address will be available following the event.

Birmingham Law Society has over 4,500 members in the West Midlands from all corners of the profession. The Society’s members include solicitors, barristers, academics, paralegals and apprentices engaged in the provision of legal services. Each year the Society responds to a vast number of Government consultations and its committees provide a focal point for the input of members. The Society has a long tradition of interaction with the Universities in the region and aims to provide representation for members from the earliest point in their career as students of law through to qualification and beyond.

2018 is a significant milestone in Birmingham’s legal history. It marks both the 200th anniversary of Birmingham Law Society and the 90th anniversary of the University of Birmingham Law School.

In celebration of this key date in the history of the city’s legal sector, the President of the Supreme Court, Baroness Hale of Richmond, will be delivering a public lecture at the Barber Institute of Fine Arts at the University of Birmingham’s Edgbaston Campus, on 29th November. The lecture will reflect on contemporary challenges and opportunities in the law and the legal profession.

Baroness Hale was the first woman to be appointed to the Supreme Court and is the first to hold the office of President.

James Turner, President of Birmingham Law Society said; “We are delighted to be welcoming Baroness Hale to Birmingham to

Baroness Hale’s lecture is one of a large number of events arranged to mark the Society’s bi-centenary. The year was launched with a judicial procession and Service held at St Philips Cathedral, with a key note speech given by Sir Andrew McFarlane. The Society holds its Gala dinner at the ICC on 4 October 2018 with comedian and impressionist Rory Bremner as the compere for the evening. A legal awards ceremony will follow in March 2019. Throughout the year the Society has arranged sporting fixtures, networking and social events for its members.

This year the Society supports Headway – the brain injury association and The Jeff Astle Foundation as the President’s chosen charities.
