LIVE 24-SEVEN

FROM CHART-TOPPING COLLABORATIONS TO TOURING WITH HARRY STYLES

as well. I think I’ve nailed that sound of Finders Keepers and you’ll hear a lot of that on the record, but also some new fun bits, R&B stuff too.

I read somewhere that you were having the title of the album inked on your ribs? Please tell me that it’s not something your mother wouldn’t look at! [laughing]. [laughing] No!! I’ve got it! It’s tattooed on my neck actually! I changed it. What is it? Well Katie, you’ll just have to wait! [laughing] Wait and see!

Mabel you’re a permanent feature on the radio at the moment, whenever I tune in, your song ‘One Shot’ is playing – just as well I love it! Absolutely! Ahh well that’s great! [laughing]

Tell us a bit about the inspiration behind the song, because music is more than just about the sound to you, it’s very much about the lyrics isn’t it? It is, well after Finders Keepers and Fine Line I was like this is so my mood right now I just want to keep dancing. They definitely had a lot of attitude and I just wanted that to come across in the songs, but yeah, I think it’s just what I’m saying in the chorus and stuff, you know, like setting the bar high, not settling and being straight with everybody like this is me, this is what I want – what I’m saying. [laughing]

Your debut album – which everyone is waiting for – tell us what we can expect and, more importantly, when can we expect it? [laughing] I love that! These questions are great… …Well I’m very excited for it. In terms of when, it will probably be some time at the beginning of next year and in terms of what you can expect, well it’s definitely more up tempo than I thought it was going to be. With the last few singles I think people have got a good idea about where it is going, but there is some evolution to the sound

It’s been a crazy ride for you so far hasn’t it? Just listen to this and take in all of this… From chart-topping collaborations to touring with Harry Styles, Brit nomination and stepping out at Wembley, the likes of Vogue magazine have said you’re one to watch, brands want you in their gear – it is all a bit surreal isn’t it? It is really surreal and I think when things happen so quickly you don’t stop and reflect on how crazy things are! When I stop and look around I’m like, “Whoa...” especially with shows, as you can look around and see the crowds and this time last year I wasn’t playing to the size of crowds that I’m playing to now. I’m very, very grateful and yeah, just taking every day as it comes. I’m very much not taking it for granted either, because as quickly as it comes it can go, you know. I have to be forward thinking all the time and not get ahead of myself. I know you won’t probably mention this – so I will – but you’re the daughter of two music industry greats; your mum was the pioneering R&B artist Neneh Cherry – and my partner has been singing her songs since I told him who I was interviewing today… …[laughing] …And your dad is the coveted producer Cameron McVey, yet you’ve never used this to your advantage, you enlisted friends to help you put your demo tapes together, was that a conscious decision of yours? It was a conscious decision. I think it was important for me to prove to myself that I had my own talent and I’m my own person and yes, I can’t help who my parents are and that the fact that I want to make music, well it just happened. I think that no one can hold it against me doing my own thing and doing my own version of me. At the same time I don’t want to separate myself from them, as I’m so proud of what they’ve accomplished in their careers.

How did they react when they heard your songs and are they proud of your determination to just do it by yourself? Yeah, they are proud. I think they would have been proud whatever I had done, music or not, they’re parents! [laughing] But obviously they are proud that I’m following in their footsteps.

Who are your musical influences? Early Justin Timberlake, R&B, then Destiny’s Child and soulful things like Motown Records and Stevie Wonder, Earth, Wind & Fire…
