Fernihough’s Outer Circuit Excelsior-JAP – how empty the land is behind the garage (Brooklands Museum).

Show, Eric was off again to Gyon. On 7th November the blown Brough covered the flying start mile at 163.82mph and the kilometre at 167.80 mph. On his unblown Brough, with a Noxal side-car attached, he raised the standing start kilometre to 80.49mph and the flying mile to 126.54mph. Then it was home again to the Brooklands Road garage where, over the winter of 1936-7, Eric and R C Rowland designed and built streamlined, enclosed fairings around the blown Brough in preparation for yet another record attempt. Then it was off once more to Gyon in April 1937. Windy weather held things up until the 19th when ‘...after three years of

preparation it was all over in 13 seconds each way, and the records were in the bag: 169.79mph for the flying kilometre and 168.6mph for the flying mile’. With the side-car fitted more records were taken, at 137.11mph (kilometre) and 135.16mph (mile). Danger ‘What is it like to be exposed on top of a motor- cycle at nearly three miles a minute? The all- impressive thing is the colossal wind pressure, which tries to tear you backwards off the machine. Lift your head and it is forced back. If your goggles are not positioned very carefully the lenses are pressed on to your eyeballs ...the engine noise, after a certain speed, seems to fade away behind you, drowned in the roar of the wind... Danger? There must always be danger in

The caption on the back of this photo says ‘Fernihough on his Brough Superior’ although there is a JAP logo on the fairing. It’s certainly outside the garage (Brooklands Society).
