BTM TALKS

Henry Hope-Frost I write this with a heavy heart following the tragic death of our friend, Henry Hope-Frost, the voice of Goodwood. Henry tragically passed away after a motorcycle accident whilst riding from his beloved Goodwood Circuit to his family home in Weybridge in March. Henry was a good friend to Brooklands and to

me. His relaxed interview technique and friendly personality made him a very popular person. With Henry he did ‘just what it said on the tin’ – entertains with ease. Brooklands Trust Member and close friend

from their Autosport days, Derek Redfern, writes: ‘Within days of Henry’s tragic death a ‘Just Giving’ campaign raised over £100,000 in just a few short days, such was Henry’s appeal to the motor sport world. Over 1,500 people supported this tribute to such an amazing man, who had not reached the pinnacle of his career, his talent was bound- less’. Our continued sympathies go to Henry’s wife Charlotte and their three boys.

Talks programme Unfortunately, the ‘Beast from the East’ put a stop to our ‘Au Revoir Allan Winn’ event on 1st March. However, the rescheduled event took place on Thursday 5th April. Gareth Tarr’s report can be found in this edition of the Bulletin. We have been overwhelmed by your support

for our programme so far this year. Gillian Goldsmith’s talk on HWM attracted over 220 attendees and our dip into live theatre, with Jenny Lockyer playing Amy Johnson’s ‘Last Flight Out’, was a great success. Our first Motor Sport Legends event kicked off the year with Simon Taylor in conversation with David ‘Hobbo’ Hobbs. Now we relish the prospect of ‘Fast Freddie Spencer’ and Steve Parrish on Wednesday 23rd May, but don’t leave it too long as tickets are selling fast, you have been warned! So, the programme going forward. First, please

note a date malfunction, our talk on the Royal Flight with Graham Laurie will take place on 19th July, not 18th as shown in the last Bulletin. On 24th April we had Reid Railton, ‘Man of

Speed’ with the author Karl Ludvigsen. This book has been four years in the making and Karl told

David ‘Hobbo’ Hobbs, former F1 driver, now US-based motor sport TV commentator (Cliff Bolton).

us about the book and the man. Our attention turns to two wheels on 17th May

with the adventures of biker Austin Vince and his round the world expeditions. To mark the 110th anniversary of Alliot Verdon

Roe’s flight here at Brooklands, we will enjoy an ‘In Conversation’ evening with Eric Verdon Roe on Thursday 7th June. On Thursday 13th September, Steve Cropley,

Editor-in-Chief of Autocar, will host a look at the future of electric and hydrogen transport, ‘The car you will be driving in 10 years time’. He will return on Thursday 18th October to

host ‘Cobb, Campbell and the Kings of Speed’, when our guests will include Don Wales, grandson of World Land Speed Record holder Sir Malcolm Campbell and. 11th November 2018 will mark a very

significant moment in time. World War One ended at 11.00am on the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. The guns on the Western Front fell silent and the horrors of the past four years were consigned to history. To mark this centenary, along with other milestones, including Vote 100 and the RAF at 100, we will be holding a special afternoon starting at 4.00pm. We will look at life in Surrey, especially at Brooklands and Weybridge on Armistice day 1918. We will welcome guests
