The things people do for Inner Wheel Knitting a Calendar

Darlington’s 70th Celebration

How do you celebrate a Club’s 70th birthday? Afternoon tea, dinner, an occasion to dress up? The Inner Wheel Club of Darlington found a much more energetic way and one that resulted in a substantial donation to the local branch of Guide Dogs for the Blind.

For their last fund-raising event of the year they did a static cycle ride! Ten members from the club cycled a total of 70 miles in recognition of 70 years of Inner Wheel in Darlington. They certainly look as if they enjoyed it!

How, one might ask, do you KNIT a calendar? The members of the Inner Wheel Club of Wrington Vale (D20) have done just that!

Little figures, perhaps representing members of an Inner Wheel Club of the past, have been created by the club’s knitters and together they form the pictures for the 2019 calendar. Not only that, but the proceeds will go to charity. Many members of Inner Wheel knit blankets, baby hats and so forth for various charities - but a calendar!

That surely is one of the more unusual ways to raise money and definitely qualifies as something completely different.

The Big Swim

Yet another amazing story showing the lengths that Inner Wheel members will go to in order to raise money for a favourite charity. Mavis Boston, last year’s President of the Inner Wheel Club of Abbeydale, District 127, undertook the challenge to swim 70 kilometres to raise money for her chosen charity, Work Ltd. In fact, this is equivalent to a double swim of the Channel!

Mavis did her swimming in the 25-metre pool at Sheffield’s Virgin Active Health Club using a club registered “swimtag”. She began the epic journey on 1st January 2018 and completed the 70 km by 12th May. It took her forty-

seven visits to the pool and her total swimming time was 35 hours. To reach her target she had to swim 2,800 lengths of the pool! “Swimtag” calculates she had used up 22,197 kcals to complete the swim. Not content with this achievement, however, she hopes to get even more for her charity by holding an Open House, which will also publicise Inner Wheel.

Just think how many turns she must have done in all that swimming!

Don’t tempt me to Take Off!

District Chairman Cynthia Whiting (D15) has chosen Blood Bikes Wales as her charity. She is an amazing lady with bags of energy and we are very lucky to have her as our DC. She got togged up in leather jacket and crash helmet which she decorated with Inner Wheel logos and climbed up on the bike for a photo shoot while the District Executive looked on in amazement!
