The “Cleaning” Ladies of District 7

District 7 International Rally took place on a lovely sunny day in May at Greetham Valley Gold Hotel, giving glorious views over the golf course – especially from the ladies’ loo!

At every table there was a flower arrangement with a candle on top, which was lit by the lady whose birthday was closest to the August birthday of the inventor of the flushing toilet, Sir John Harrington. He was a courtier at the court of Queen Elizabeth I, an unlikely person, one would have thought, to invent something which has stood the test of time!

With the theme being very much related to the toilet, the raffle was very successful with sufficient being raised, along with donations from several clubs, to ensure that we can help provide at least 2 school blocks and 8 individual latrines.

Andrew Brown, the speaker from the charity “Toilet Twinning” was not intimidated by the room full of 130 ladies! He gave an amusing and informative presentation after a pleasant lunch together. District 7 ladies have made a huge difference to the lives of so many people through our support for the charity and this is much appreciated by those in need.

The ladies of the Inner Wheel Club of Grantham were certainly well prepared for cleaning duties. But where DID the toilet seat come from?

A Special Story as told by MANDY ELLIS of Uttoxeter Inner Wheel Club

At our January meeting we were each given a greetings card to send to an International Club on behalf of Uttoxeter Inner Wheel Club (D21) to celebrate Inner Wheel Day. I immediately decided to send mine to New Zealand as my sister and brother-in-law have lived there for over 18 years. Having looked up New Zealand in our Club Directory, I chose Auckland. I could not believe my eyes when the Club President’s address was listed as St Helier’s Bay, the same area of Auckland as my sister. I wrote the card, sending best wishes from everyone in the Uttoxeter Club and decided to forward it to my sister with a note asking her if she could hand deliver it.

On receipt and as requested, but feeling very nervous, she knocked on the President’s door, to be greeted by her husband who invited her in and asked her to wait in the drawing room while he fetched his wife. (She was enjoying a swim in the outdoor pool.)

My sister was made very welcome and spent a lovely afternoon with the President who told her all about their club and its various activities. She was invited to their next social event and the President even offered to pick her up. My sister accepted the invitation and attended the social and is now considering joining the club.

Some days later our President received a reply to our card with greetings from Auckland and a newsletter that she read out at our meeting!

Sedgemoor’s Volunteers

Here are several of our members outside Stockmoor Lodge Nursing Home after our meeting with Barbara Lee, the Manager to discuss our role as Volunteers. Nothing is set in stone but to befriend a lonely person for either half an hour or to take them outside, would be most welcome. A little training will be given for fire and health and safety rules and how to use a wheelchair (not always as easy as it looks!) Members came away with good thoughts and positivity for this and hope that the Sedgemoor Club (D20) will in due course be part of this Community project.

Available to all members of Inner Wheel and their families, our well - equipped, residential three - bedroomed first floor flat.

Sea views, private patio, central heating, satellite TV, washer/dryer, sleeps 6.

Bookings all year.
