Annual

Assembly Leicester 2018

Apart from the surroundings, you could have been forgiven for thinking you were in some tropical resort. The temperature soared but there was nothing for it but to get down to work! Immediate Past President Liz Thomas opened proceedings before handing on the chain of office to Association President Ann who then addressed the company expressing her hopes for a good and successful Inner Wheel year ahead.

Peer Group meetings are a very important part of the work of the Assembly with District Chairmen, 1st Vice Chairmen, Members of Council, Secretaries, Treasurers, Membership Officers, International Service Chairmen and Editors all working in their individual groups. In a series of short presentations on the following morning we learned more of such topics as using Facebook to enhance the image of Inner Wheel and an idea to help commemorate the centenary of the end of the First World War.

An important part of any Assembly is an information session on the Association President’s charity. This year Association President Ann has selected Jessie’s Fund, a charity helping children with complex conditions to express themselves through music. The video clips showed, in a very moving way, the difference music therapy can make.

The first Council meeting of the new session takes place at Leicester and this was ably chaired by our new President. It is not, however, all work and no play! There is time for socialising whether with your own District or joining together with other districts. Friendships are made, old friendships renewed and District Executive members have a chance to “bond” in preparation for the year ahead.

financial support, we persuaded a Dutch business woman, Yoke, to join the management committee in a fund- raising capacity.

Yomelelani “Be Strong”

Rotarian Roger and I have visited South Africa regularly since 2005, spending much of our time in Hermanus, about 100 kilometres east of Cape Town, a small town on the coast of the Garden Route. Every year we have been involved with trying to help young children in the nearby township.

About three years ago a local business rebuilt a dilapidated youth centre on the condition that others provided the money to run a creche and pre-school. Together with two other English friends, we decided to set up an English charity - the Yomelelani Trust. Donations together with some government grants have enabled it to support a creche of some 70 children, 3 months to 3 years old and a pre-school of 80 children aged 3 to 6. In seeking to provide more

This year she held a Magical Mystery fundraising dinner in a grotto lit by fairy lights, beneath milkweed trees, close to the sea shore. The diners not only had a superb meal but also enjoyed singing by the 3 - 6 year olds from the pre-school and also from their teachers. The highlight at the end of the evening was when Yoke gave Yomelelani the total proceeds from the sale of the tickets.

During our visit this year we were joined by another member, Denise, of Purley Inner Wheel and her Rotary husband. They were extremely impressed with what they saw and gave their support. You can visit the website www.yomelelani.co.za to see why we try so hard to help.
