Sheep removed from Macey‘s Meadow for safety
A HANDFUL of inconsiderate dog owners are being blamed for the decision to remove sheep from a parish-owned field. The sheep were taken out of Macey’s Meadow in West Malling due to increasing cases of sheep worrying, culminating in a ewe having to be put down earlier this
year.Alan West, who owns the sheep, decided enough was enough, and took away the 18 animals who were in the meadow. He said: “We’d kept sheep there for there for nearly 20 years, and we’d always had the odd incident. We had to stitch the occasional wound and we once had to carry out an abortion. “But they have increased over the past year, with one inci- dent where a couple of sheep were chased over a fence. Then there was the time that a ewe broke a leg and had to be put down. It is really sad that we had to do this. ”Signs had been put up advising dog owners to keep their pets on leads in the field with the sheep, but, Mr West says, these were ignored.
“Most dog owners are very considerate,” he added. “But you always get some who will let their dogs run loose.“On a couple of occasions, I spoke to dog owners whose pets were off their leads and they told me their dog was just having fun. It may be fun for the dog, but it certainly isn’t for the sheep. ”Parish council chairman Trudy Dean admitted it was disap- pointing to have the sheep removed from the field, but backed
Building giants thanked for boulders
WEST Malling Parish Council has thanked a local developer for providing two large stones which will prevent traveller incursions on the playing field.
The Gallagher organisation supplied two large ragstones to restrict access to the open area. A spokesman said:
“We’re grateful to Gallagher for providing two large ragstone boulders to restrict access to the playing field entrance at the village hall and prevent caravans passing this point.”
Mr West’s decision. She said: “We are very upset that they are no longer pres-
ent, as people enjoyed seeing them, particularly after lambing in spring.“We will now also have to do more mowing to keep the grass down and this will involve more cost and time to our volunteers.”
