Holmesdale set to become academy
A TROUBLED Snod land Sch ool is to be sponsored bySwaleAcad - emies Tru st ah ead of its switch to anacad emy. Holmesdale School, which fell
into special measures earlier this year, will be looked after by the trust, which already has a number ofschools across Kent and Sussex. The school was rated as good by
inspectors as recently as four years ago, but is nowin specialmeasures following a report which criticised it in each of the five main cate- gories in which Ofsted rates schools. Urgent improvements were re-
quired in leadership and manage- ment, quality ofteaching, learning and assessment, personal develop- ment, behaviour and welfare, out- comes for pupils and 16-19 study programmes. There were considerable con-
cerns surrounding safeguarding, attendance reporting and follow- ing up on pupil absence. All schools judged inadequate are ordered to convert into an
academy, and the regional schools commissioner has chosen SAT as the trust to sponsor Holmesdale. In a joint statement, Keith Ab-
bott, Kent County Council’s Direc- tor for Education Planning and Access, and Jon Whitcombe, prin- cipal and CEOofSwaleAcademies Trust, said: “Following an Ofsted inspection earlier this year, which placed The Holmesdale School, Snodland, into SpecialMeasures, a directive academy order was is- sued by the Regional SchoolsCom- missioner (RSC), requiring the school to convert to an academy. “The RSC has now announced
that the Swale Academies Trust has been appointed as the sponsor, and that the school will join this multi-academy trust on conver- sion. “Kent County Council continues
to work closely with SAT on a number of projects across the county and is already in discussion with the trust and the school fur- ther to this development.”
