W The SouthWest Chat

elcome to the July issue of SouthWest Horse Trader. If you are picking us up for the first time, welcome.

As I go to press, the temperatures are smoldering

and the horse trainers are getting crankier. The endless hot days are starting to wear on them . . . and here comes July and August in the South! I even saw posts today of trainers threatening to keeping a roll of duct tape next to the arena gate for complainers. We have another training article from Frankie Gay-

tan starting on page 15. This month he talks about First Rides on your 2 year olds. Elaine Swiss discusses con- trolling your horse’s feet for trail riding success in One Step at a Time for Trail Control on page 16. Tommy Powell demonstrates how to Add Smoothness & Speed to the Spin. We sure hope that you enjoy these articles. I’ve had endless days of office work and I have to

admit, I’ve been negligent in my riding duties. There just hasn’t been enough hours in the day. I did put the ex- cuses train to rest and I managed to get a couple of rides under my belt during June. Ironically, when I take the time to groom and ride, I can accomplish so much more in my day. Except for fleeing to the other end of the pasture

when being caught for ride 3 and 4, the horse really en- joys it too. Seriously, she really does. She’s been known

AQHA Youth World Cup is in Bryan, TX, the Junior Paint World and the Appaloosa Youth Show are underway in Fort Worth. The IEA Western Nationals and the NRHA Collegiate Reining Championship are also running during the NRHA Derby in Oklahoma City, OK. We managed to corral a couple of trainers during

the NRHA Derby to ask them what they look for in a Youth horse. See page 18 for their answers. Watch for coverage on these youth events and more

in our annual Youth Issue in September! The youth issue special will be $250 full and $150 half page full color congratulatory ads. Deadline is August 10. Next month: Feed & Nutrition. Deadline July 10.
