WAYFARER OPENS NATRC FALL SEASON

The North American Trail Ride Conference

(NATRC) launches its fall competitive trail season at the Wayfarer at Parrie Haynes CTR on September 14- 16 in Killeen, Texas. The beneficiary of the ride is the Boys and Girls Club that sponsors camps throughout the year at the facility. “We have miles of new trails this year, “said Kate

Love Hollar, the facility manager and ranch host for the Wayfarer ride. “There has been a great deal of ef- fort expended on cedar abatement, so even the older trails seem completely different.” “And we have the swimming pool for post-com-

petition fun,” she added. This location is not the Par- rie Haynes Equestrian Center found on the east side of the Parrie Haynes Ranch property but is on the west side.

Ride management is planning a cook-out on Fri-

day evening and a potluck grill-your-own on Saturday evening. This is the 8th year for the Wayfarer, although it changed locations from the Storm Ranch in Wim- berley to Parrie Haynes Ranch in 2014. A NATRC competitive trail ride is not a race, but

rather a long-distance event with several judged ob- servations on the natural trail. There are one-day and two-day options in six divisions. The distances range from 10 miles to 26 miles each day, with speeds rang- ing from 3.5 mph to 5.5 mph. There are pulse and res- piration checkpoints for the horses which are also evaluated throughout the event by a licensed veteri- narian. The Parrie Haynes facility has electric hook-ups

and bunkhouses available for camping. More infor- mation about the Wayfarer can be found on the NATRC website (natrc4.org and natrc.org) or by call- ing Elaine Swiss on 830-825-3032. w

INTRODUCTORY RIDE OPTION NEW THIS YEAR

The North American Trail Ride Conference is offering

an introductory distance this year at competitions across the country. The traditional format for NATRC is a two-day event, called an A-ride, featuring 15-34 miles of trail each day at various speeds from 3.5 to 5.5 mph. In recent years, there were more one-day options offered, called B rides, fea- turing the same distances and speeds but without the second day of competition. In 2018, the NATRC Board of Directors voted to sanc-

tion an Introductory ride of shorter distance (8-12 miles) and no time constraints. This option is a C-ride. The concept is to remove the anxiety of both long distance and speed while exposing new competitors to the experience of judged natu- ral observations on the trail. However, this option is not like a trail challenge as there are only 2-3 observations over the 8-12-mile course and new competitors are encouraged to maintain the traditional pace if they are able. In the southwest region,

the Introductory C-Ride op- tion was offered at the Raising the Bar CTR at C-Bar Ranch in March and will be offered again at the Wayfarer at Par- rie Haynes on September 15 in Killeen, Texas. For more info, contact Elaine Swiss on swissranch@earthlink.net. w
