JULY 2018: ISSUE 111

I was recently honoured to be invited, together with many other Rotary Presidents and District Executives, to celebrate the 10th anniversary the of Freedom from Fistula Charity. In 2008, Ann Gloag OBE, set up the Charity to help woman and girls in Africa who are injured in childbirth and left permanently incontinent. During the evening in Kinfauns Castle, we heard a presentation from Ann about the work of the charity. We heard that during the past 10 years the charity has: • Performed more that 6,500 surgeries • Delivered more than 10,000 babies • Provided care to more than 100,000 children.

This is an amazing achievement however the work still needs to be continued as there are an estimated 2 million woman and girls suffering from obstetric fistula. We heard that during these last 10 years, Rotary Clubs across Scotland have funded the training of 60 Nurse Midwife Technicians in Malawi and purchased two Landcruisers which provide a lifeline for the team to access patients in the most rural areas. A amazing achievement. The evening also included dinner and entertainment from Belle Voci, finalists in this year’s The Voice.

An e x c e l l e n t ev eni ng, an amazing charity, a demonstration of what Rotary has achieved and some seeds planted on a potential future area of focus for our club.
