NEWS hedrin is helping parents to get it right first time NPA IN FOCUS


It can feel that complaining about funding cuts is like complaining about the weather. We are never going to change it, and yet we still grumble when the dark clouds are hovering. But when it comes to cuts that could affect business viability and impact patient care, we can’t let it go unchallenged.


thousands of people have already added their names to the community Pharmacy northern Ireland (cPnI) online petition. cPnI points out that 123,000 people rely on community pharmacies in northern Ireland every day, but the sector is facing a £20m deficit.


the nPa is supporting cPnI’s campaign to raise awareness of the prolonged government underfunding of the sector and, even though campaigns of this nature rarely result in U-turns, they can nevertheless be very worthwhile.


When the nPa campaigned against cuts in England, 2.5 million people signed our petition, making it the UK’s biggest ever. that is 2.5 million voters who have made it clear that pharmacy funding is at least one of their concerns when they get to the ballot box. these factors weigh heavy on the decision makers, who hold pharmacy’s future in their hands. In addition, our efforts brought about a delay to the cuts, reducing the impact by £52 million. It’s also about giving a clear signal to government that it will be held to account for its actions – thereby encouraging considerate policy-making in the future.


In northern Ireland - and throughout the UK - the nPa continues to campaign on the issues pharmacy contractors are facing, as well as making the wider public aware of the wealth of support and services they can access in their pharmacy.


Speaking of which, the nPa is holding PgD vaccination training, on Sunday 22 July, and again on Sunday 2 September, in the crowne Plaza hotel, in Belfast, that will allow pharmacies to expand on the services they can offer.


We have also signed up a new business partner www.traveljab.co.uk that allows patients to search, compare and book vaccinations across the UK by searching for a convenient pharmacy travel clinic. this strategic business partner levels the playing field for smaller pharmacies that might ordinarily struggle with digital marketing and helps them get a foothold in the digital space.
