EmErgEncY mEEtIng caLLED on crISIS In commUnItY PharmacY

Elected representatives, concerned patient groups and representatives of local community pharmacy recently held an emergency meeting at the Long gallery at Stormont to address the deepening crisis in community pharmacy. the meeting was held in response to a survey carried out by community Pharmacy nI (cPnI), which showed that as many as 87 per cent of local pharmacists were ‘very worried about their own businesses’ with 81 per cent stating that the ‘current funding situation is having an impact on their own health and wellbeing'.

‘there is a real threat,’ said cPnI chief Executive, gerard green, that the continued under funding by the Department of health will result in pharmacies closing. the frontline services that community pharmacists provide are under attack and the prolonged government underfunding is putting huge financial strain on many.’

4 - PharmacY In focUS

greencastle Pharmacy in newtownabbey has been sold to a nI group operator following significant interest from buyers in both northern Ireland and the republic of Ireland. the modern premises, which underwent a refit in recent years, were previously owned by Dublin-based David Beggs, who appointed specialist business property advisor, christie & co to help him sell his last pharmacy in northern Ireland.

‘the pharmacy has been trading well,’ said Karl clezy, Director at christie & co, ‘and it was obvious that the new owners could see further opportunities with this site. the previous owner was not ‘hands on’ as he lived in Dublin, however the new operators are experienced in the industry and will add greencastle to their existing portfolio, with further investment to grow the business.’

Pif award winners hit headlines again!

an award-winning partnership, which scooped a Pharmacy in focus award in January of this year, has hit the headlines again!

In June, School of Pharmacy staff at Queen’s University, Belfast were successful in the latest round of University teaching awards, which recognise and reward excellent examples of teaching and learning.

the two recipients, Dr maurice hall and Dr Lezley-anne hanna: who were both previous winners of these awards, were delighted to receive recognition for their teaching within the ‘team’ category.

In January, Dr hall and Dr hanna picked up the ehealth and Innovation in Pharmacy Practice for their ground- breaking app: otc consult, which

new owner for greencastle Pharmacy

provides quick access to evidence- based information on over 70 self-treatable conditions to aid decision-making in practice and professional development.

BcPP funds 800th Project! community Development and health network (cDhn) recently celebrated funding its 800th Building the community-Pharmacy Partnership (BcPP) project!

this milestone coincided with BcPP having invested a total of £5.3 million in grants to bring community and pharmacy together to tackle health inequalities. the 800th BcPP project is a partnership between Women’s tec and Pharmacist Kevin mcDevitt from crossin’s chemist, and consisted of interactive sessions that addressed mental health and well- being. Women’s tec provides non-traditional training courses to women and has a great reputation for engaging women, who are

economically disadvantaged, have low qualifications, are lone parents or have experienced some level of crisis in their lives. action mental health was also involved in the project to highlight mental health issues and introduce other support available in the community.

to mark this wonderful achievement, cDhn held a celebration event, hosted by Women’s tEc and attended by representatives from BcPP projects, the health and Social care Board (hScB), the Department of health, Pharmacy forum and community Pharmacy nI (cPnI). this was a great opportunity to showcase the partnership between community groups and pharmacists and the impact that it makes in people’s lives.
