PRESIDENT’S WELCOME ULSTER CHEMISTS’

t

he summer has kicked in again and our thoughts turn to the annual summer holiday! that is, of course, if you have managed to

secure the services of a locum pharmacist. the current shortage of pharmacists in the community setting is adding to the strain many contractors and pharmacists are dealing with already.

the next wave of practice-based pharmacists are being appointed and a budget of £15m set aside to do this. this two-pronged assault on community pharmacy, along with remuneration and workforce diversion, are having a serious impact on both the morale and the health of those of us working in a community setting.

Uca has always been supportive of the role of the practice-based pharmacist in complementing the excellent work that goes on in the community pharmacy network, but it seems that this project is going ahead to the detriment of the community pharmacy network: a network that is now under pressure from a serious lack of investment and lack

With no Executive in place, we need all the friends we can get at Westminster. the northern Ireland community pharmacy network cannot be allowed to become the ‘poor cousin’ of its Scottish and Welsh counterparts.

our latest group of pre-registration students have just finished their exams, and I am delighted to say that Uca pre-reg students, who attended our course, have been well prepared. I look forward to their registration over the summer.

of vision from the Department of health. our article on page 14/15 highlights the issues involved and what cPnI is doing to highlight these pressures at a political and departmental level.

the response from richard Pengelly shows how little he understands about our role and how the extension of that role can help relieve pressure on the nhS. Ian Paisley Jnr’s comments are welcome.

year, give natalie a buzz at the Uca office on 028 9065 6576.

this will be my last foreword for Pharmacy in focus. after nearly three years in my current role as Uca President, it is time for me to stand down. the new cPnI/Uca merged body will take over very soon as the merger completes over the summer.

I hope you will join me in wishing them every success in their role in progressing community pharmacy projects and representing all pharmacists in these difficult times. the four members of Uca, who will join the cPnI Board, will do just that.

I hope you all have a great summer and get that break after all!

‘THANK YOU’ FROM SOS BUS NI

on behalf of the Board, staff and volunteers, I would like to thank the Uca for supporting SoS nI through a fundraiser in July/august 2017. We are delighted that, collectively, all the pharmacies that took part raised an incredible total of £14089.91! this has had an immediate effect on our night time Services and allowed us to continue our presence on the streets helping those in need.

Since starting in november 2007, SoS Bus nI has engaged with over 300,000 people and has helped over 10,000 vulnerable people on board our buses, which include people who are experiencing difficulties due to drug or alcohol misuse, a mental health issue, assault, homelessness or simply needing someone to talk to. SoS nI aims to build a city where

volunteers are equipped to create safe havens for the vulnerable, providing welfare and empowering the next generation. By raising funds and awareness through fundraising in your pharmacies, this enables us to continue our work on the streets of northern Ireland helping people in their time of need.

SoS Bus nI will once again call on pharmacies to help raise funds and awareness in august 2018, so look out for information on the campaign. With thanks to your continued support, SoS Bus nI can continue to be recognised as a safe haven on the streets of Belfast and work in partnership on our streets to help vulnerable people in their time of need.

DO YOU FEEL LIKE DANCING?

addiction nI is part of the Inspire group - the leading mental health organisation in northern Ireland - and this enables it to provide a much more holistic service to all of its clients.

as part of its 40th anniversary celebrations, addiction nI is inviting all pharmacists and their staff to put on their dancing shoes and compete in a special Strictly come Dancing competition to raise both awareness of and funds for Inspire and addiction nI!

Participants will be introduced to the world of quicksteps and foxtrots, tangos and jives as a team of professional choreographers puts you through your steps.

fake tan, sparkles and fabulous costumes are all part of the package!

the provisional date for the dancing extravaganza is Saturday 6 october 2018 and will take place in a central Belfast venue.
