this year addiction nI celebrates its 40th anniversary and is inviting pharmacies to get involved in the celebration to help raise awareness and funds for this fantastic local charity.
addiction nI was the first organisation to provide a self-referral service to individuals impacted by alcohol and/or drugs, and now provides support for around 2000 individuals a year across the region.
to mark the start of its 40th anniversary celebrations addiction nI has announced the launch of a new fundraising campaign.
time for tea week provides an opportunity to have a tea party whenever and wherever you want.
GDPR IN ACTION
there was a lot of information sent out to pharmacies in the run-up to the may deadline for gDPr compliance, including a comprehensive article in our may edition of Pharmacy in focus.
hopefully everyone has started to work through the excellent resources made available by cPnI, including the step-by-step booklet. resources are also available from nPa and numark for their members and remember, if you have any questions about your gDPr
compliance, please don’t hesitate to contact cPnI or any organisation you work with for assistance.
Unfortunately, since our last edition went to print, the Department of health ruled that community pharmacies must appoint a Data Protection officer.
as community pharmacies are deemed to be public authorities, the gDPr introduces a duty on them to appoint a data protection officer (DPo). the role of the DPo is laid out
by the Information commissioners office as follows:
• DPos assist you to monitor internal compliance, inform and advise on your data protection obligations, provide advice regarding Data Protection Impact assessments (DPIas) and act as a contact point for data subjects and the supervisory authority.
• the DPo must be independent, an expert in data protection, adequately resourced, and report to the highest management level.
• a DPo can be an existing employee or externally appointed.
• In some cases several organisations can appoint a single DPo between them.
If you need more information and support, please contact me on 028 9065 6576 or email me on
adrienne@uca.org.uk.

the charity is calling on everyone, who understands the importance of its work - and anyone who wants to challenge the ongoing stigma surrounding alcohol and drug problems - to host a tea party at work, home, school or in the community. It is a very real problem, with approximately one in thirteen people in nI affected by alcohol and/or drug misuse, with alcohol the most common form of substance abuse.

UCA Pre-reg Training Programme We have now launched our excellent Pre-reg training Programme for 2018- 19! Uca is building on the success of last year’s programme by increasing the number of expert pharmacists presenting on important topics such as respiratory conditions, diabetes, pharmacy-based services such as Stop Smoking, mUrs, managing Your medicines and much more. this offers an unrivalled opportunity for our new pharmacists to learn from experienced pharmacist leaders. and, on the last day of our programme, our full mock exam works really well in preparing pre-reg pharmacists for the big day ahead of them. to book a place for your student, email natalie on
support@uca.org.uk with your student’s name.
Tutor Assistance We don’t forget about the tutor throughout our programme, with
regular feedback about your student’s performance on the programme, plus extra help and assistance when and where required for both student and tutor.
Drug Tariff Print Service as well as expert help on effective coding and endorsing prescriptions, pre-reg pharmacists on the Uca programme also receive guidance on how to use the Drug tariff. a hard copy is required for the exam, and Uca offers a print service to any student sitting the exam in northern Ireland.
Life After Registration Seminar and Jobs Fair When the exam is over, our new pharmacists then start the hunt for a job. Uca arranges an annual Life after registration seminar to help them navigate their new career path. there is so much to think about as they embark on their new career – employment or self-employment, tax, personal finance, how to write a cV, how to do well at interview, what career options do they have? Uca aims to provide some answers PLUS we host a jobs fair following the seminar with employers from across the UK and Ireland showcasing their opportunities.
2019-20 Placement Year Looking ahead for the next pre-reg year, if you still require a trainee pharmacist, contact Uca to ensure we have your details as students still approach Uca for signposting to potential placements even at this late stage.
