Numark membership: the benefits
By Wayne Harrison I’ve now worked for numark for more than ten years, so, with that level of experience, I’m in an excellent position to both fully understand - and to communicate - the first-class service and products that numark provides to members to ensure their business is running smoothly.
as a regional Sales manager, I support local Pharmacy Development managers (PDms) to ensure they have what they need to provide the best possible offering to our members.
my day is usually spilt between joint visits to members with PDms and liaising internally to help drive members forward with new initiatives and helping to improve the offering we provide. my role as a regional Sales manager is varied and exciting, and enables me to shape our support and help deliver it to members.
numark is a virtual head office for independent pharmacies. If you are a branch, and there are multiple pharmacies, you can ring a head office for support and advice. for independent pharmacies, they can contact numark directly. for many members, that’s exactly what they do.
numark provides a wide range of support materials both online and in print and it is my role to ensure they are aware of how numark can help them each month and guide them to make the right decisions for their business.
as with any pharmacy I visit, when visiting non-members, the most important question to ask is what is in their business plan. this gives me an insight into who the owner is and what they want their business to achieve.
this allows me to have an insight into their business and how numark can support them. once I understand the business plan, we can plug into our offering and discuss how it can support their medium and long-term goals.
numark provides a wide range of products and services which are
detailed in the one Pack Promise (or business pack as some call it). the pack contains all the information you, your staff and business need on a monthly basis.
our web solution, numarknet, allows you to access guidance, training, information, resources, SoPs, pharmacy equipment… you name it and you’ll find it on numarknet.
Every member is different, but the majority of my members engage with the information numark provides and the most common quote I hear is ‘I didn’t know you did that’.
Whilst it’s vital that commercially numark works for members, it’s the wider business support that often surprises members and non- members alike.
here’s a scenario I liken to the numark membership: I have a subscription to Sky tV, but I don’t watch any television at home because I am always on the go.
With Sky tV, I can find the right package the suits me and my lifestyle. I can pick and choose the elements I need -just like the numark membership.
at numark, you can find a package that suits you, your business and team. If you engage and want it to work, it will. the more you engage, the more value you get for your money.
as a membership organisation, we negotiate deals that you wouldn’t be able to secure yourself. our back office support is second to none and, with 28 PDms field based, we visit independent pharmacies on a regular basis, more than many others in the industry.
Due to funding cuts, a lot of community pharmacies are under pressure. there has never been a more important time to be a numark member than now.
We continue to negotiate commercial deals with manufacturers available through the three main wholesalers,
and to offer unique and intuitive It solutions which can manage your purchasing, so you always benefit from the best deal in the market.
We listen to member feedback to ensure we are providing what our members want - and need - to smoothly run their business.
We always look to improve our offering, for example, during recent years we have introduced our insurance portfolio, our information service line, a dispensing appliance contractor (nucare) and our partnership generics scheme numerics teva: all as a result of member feedback.
added to that, in april this year we took the decision to pay all reduced wholesaler discounts via the numark rebates, which improves cash flow

and makes it easier to review discounts. We do listen and are consistently improving our offering. my biggest piece of advice would be to step away from the Pmr. If you look at a restaurant kitchen, the head chef oversees the sous chefs and runs the pass, they don’t cook the chips.
a pharmacist is best placed to advise patients and carry out vital services, which will improve compliance with medication and enable them to generate income via essential and advanced services.
that’s where numark comes in. We support, advise, guide and educate each and every one of our members to embrace change, evolve their businesses and – most importantly - drive profitability every step of the way.
