s the flashlights went off and the applause echoed around the theatre, we here at Savile Row Style Magazine added our cheers to the
celebrations as Gary Oldman was presented with his Best Actor Oscar for his portrayal of Sir Winston Churchill in the Darkest Hour. Not only was the film the best we’ve seen in a long time, the attention to detail was outstanding thanks to the team at Henry Poole & Co who were responsible for ensuring all Oldman’s suits were historically accurate. As MD Simon Cundey told us: “Authenticity was everything.” To be part of such a global triumph is clearly great news for the team at 15 Savile Row but it also brings a huge amount of kudos to the Row in general, particularly at a time it is working to find its place in an increasingly modern and technologically-driven world. Of course, Savile Row must stand for
tradition and quality but, as William Skinner, MD of Dege & Skinner, says in an interview in this edition, “Being 153 years old is a great accolade… but we need to keep up with the times. We need to make sure we are relevant to today and tomorrow’s customer and that will be the challenge over the next five to 10 years.” A similar message came from Andrew Ramroop, who tells Cindy Lawford in another interview: “What we do on Savile Row is unique and relevant, and you’ve got to be relevant.” This determination to be relevant is not
lost on the people involved in a major study called A Vision for East Mayfair which was launched last year and which, I’m pleased to see, has now produced a long-term plan for the area. We report on this collaborative venture, which will see this important part of London remain a thriving cultural hub for bespoke tailoring as well as modern and contemporary art, later in the magazine but the highlights include:
EDITOR’S NOTES
• Improve the street using the best quality materials to match the international reputation of Savile Row
• Celebrate the presence of the Savile Row tailors through details in the paving at main entrances, and possibly at lightwells, to draw attention to lower- ground workshops
• Rationalise kerbside parking, waiting and loading zones to improve views across the street, facilitate pedestrian crossing and maximise footway space
As Julian Stocks, CEO at Pollen Estate
which owns 45 buildings in East Mayfair, tells us: “By the end of 2018, this historic corner of Mayfair will be transformed, offering a more welcoming and thriving environment.”
What we do on Savile Row is unique and relevant, and you’ve got to be relevant
Rod Gilchrist takes a look at the women making their mark on Savile Row while Robin Dutt looks back on the enduring legacy of Sir Hardy Amies whose first words – or thereabouts – to a young Robin were: “Dear boy, you can do anything when you have style.” We here at Savile Row Style Magazine certainly think he had a point.
Happy reading!
