time, the workforces of most firms weren’t getting any younger – in fact they were getting quite old – so, even though some companies had their own apprentice schemes, there was a desire to train more people for the next generation. We came up with the Savile Row Bespoke Diploma, which is awarded every year to those who have pretty much completed their apprenticeship. Since 2004, more than 70 people have been awarded their diploma and of those 95% are still involved in the trade. The association, of which I am now delighted to be chairman, has been hugely successful. You go around various workshops in Savile Row and people expect to see a lot of older people but there are many younger faces. And people expect to see a male-dominated environment but there are a lot of fully-trained girls working here too. The dynamics have changed a lot. People who come for an apprenticeship are a bit more mature nowadays, a bit more set on the path they want to follow. They know they want to work with their hands. Some people have got degrees before they figure out what they really want to do.” n
