The do-it-all experts of the airport By Michael Badejo

ave you ever wondered what makes the airport tick? How does such a unique building keep
people moving, make sure everything is secure, and have planes landing here and taking off – all at the same time, 24/7/365?
It might sound impossible, but all of this and more is overseen by a small group of experts in the airport. At YWG, these proficient professionals are called Airport Operations Man- agers. As an AOM, they manage the operational side of everything that happens inside the terminal and on the airfield. From gating to security screening and noise management to special events, if it happens at the air- port our AOMs are in the know. A regular day for the AOMs is any- thing but. While they do have a stan- dard set of tasks to handle every day, their role is to ultimately make sure passengers and planes get where they need to go, while ensuring regular op- erations within the terminal. them as the 311 for the city within the airport terminal and airfield – harmo- nizing is their top priority. Where do AOMs work in the airport?
Te nature of the job means they are
constantly walking the terminal, rack- ing up about 30,000 steps a day during their shifts. Not only does that mean they stay fit, but it also means that there’s a chance you’ll see them during your next visit to the airport. One of the reasons they’re on the go?
Tey’ve got to manage relationships and information with every partner. Alongside that, safety and security is paramount to smooth operations, which means AOMs are linked with some very important individuals across the city and on the campus: RCMP, Airport Fire Department, Winnipeg Police Service,
the Winnipeg Fire
Paramedic Service and more. All of these groups play a concerted role in keeping everyone safe and ensuring re- sponse teams are prepared for any situ- ation in an area as unique as an airport.
AOMs also direct staff and partners within the airport. From the moment you enter the airport campus by ve- hicle, AOMs help direct the ballet of your travel experience – including restaurants, special events, electricity, managing delays, unplanned landings and even repairing equipment. While things sometimes don’t go as planned, they often get righted due to their leadership across the board.
