Quirky customs Afrikaner hospitality though is likely what will get you

hooked to revisiting South Africa - over and over again. Tere is no better place to be than around a braai (barbecue

or grill, a social custom in South Africa) with a beer in your hand, followed by pap en sous (sugared sweet potato), and maybe a four-bean salad (the vegetable afterthought). Where else in the world is there a country that celebrates a

national braai day? And if you ever dared to have a braai with hamburger patties and hot dogs – you would be disinherited. It’s steak, steak, steak! And of course it’s served as the very famous sosaties (kebabs). South African cuisine has inherited a lot of outside influ-

ences, especially from Europe and Asia during colonial times. Te country has some of the tastiest meats in the world, and chefs venture beyond the typical beef and pork. Ostrich is found on many menus, as is springbok, and if you are lucky you might even get to enjoy kudu. Bunny chows, Durban’s famous hollowed-out, half loaves of bread stuffed with curry, are half the reason the native-born return home. You have not tried South African cuisine if you haven't tried a bunny chow. South Africa is also big on beer production with their SAB

World of Beer tour in Johannesburg, said to be the top tour- ist attraction in the country. Have I convinced you yet to visit? Peggy Venter spent her first 29 years in her native South Africa – home town Empangeni – before crossing the big pond and tak- ing up life and career as a fine art wedding photographer in Winnipeg (wpwpc.com/peggy).
