What’s new at the International Peace Garden By Elva Russell
Succulents in the fabulous International Peace Garden collection. O
pened in 1932 and attended by at least 50,000 well-wishers, the International Peace Garden is the only one of its kind in the world.
It’s not that there aren’t other gardens called by this
name, but none of them straddle a border between two countries where you can enter and, once inside, never have to acknowledge your citizenship on either side of the invisible line. Tis lovely haven of peace and under- standing occupies 2,419.3 acres (9.79 square km) on the border between North Dakota and Manitoba on the Turtle Mountain. “Mountain?” you say. “On the Prairies?” Perhaps that designation seems a bit exaggerated, but

what is a mountain except an elevated place on a flat plain? And this mountain is very special. According to some legends, it was the place where the seven tribes who came to North America from Asia converged and then spread out across this continent. It continued down the ages to be the place where various First Nations came together to talk peace among themselves. It is still a mystery how they could see the shape of the
elevation, which looks like a turtle from above. Never- theless, it was this telltale shape that intrigued gardener Dr. Henry J. Moore, as he flew across the prairie in 1929 and saw what he deemed the perfect place to locate his dream of a garden that would forever stand for peace between our two nations.
