was originally slated to be the interpretive centre but is now largely the atrium for the exciting green adventure on the far side. Te building also houses a seasonal café and a gift shop. A potage garden has been established out- side the café, where many of the vegetables and herbs are grown fresh to be served inside. Completed over the past few years has been the beautiful

perennials collection, which surrounds a trio of ponds and fountains. A wrought iron fence had to be constructed to keep out hungry critters, and this has allowed the various fruit trees and shrubby plants to develop. Gardeners will find it an excellent example of what will grow in the region and, if you ask the gardeners, what has not done so well. Te Garden is planning to complete what is known as the East Cascade, the area leading westward from the perennials garden. Te stream running through this area flows along what would be the boundary line between the two countries, passing the 9/11 Memorial on its south side and, on the north, a carillon tower which chimes out the quarter hours. Beneath a current avenue of trees on either side, a walkway extends to the Peace Chapel, which was constructed by the Order of the Eastern Star in 1970 and is also slated for renovation. Te Garden is a 2 1/2-hour drive from Winnipeg or an hour south of Brandon. It is definitely worth the trip. By the way, you don’t need to go through any customs to get in and a driv- er’s licence is all you need to re-enter Canada.
