ROMEO, ROMEO AND JULIET San Diego’s Roustabouts Theatre Co. is the brainchild of Ruff Yeager, Will

Cooper and Phil Johnson. It’s a non-profit theatre company dedicated to “entertaining, educating, and inspiring audiences by producing fresh visions of classics, well-known contemporary plays and new works.” You may remember them from their genre-bending, critically-acclaimed earlier work,She-Rantulas From Outer Space in 3D!, which wowed audiences at Diversionary Theatre and went on to be one of the 200 productions in the New York Fringe Festival. Well the boys are back for another take, and this time their bringing us their version of the Shakespeare classic and gives our two lovers’ burgeoning sexual awakenings a little twist. How you might ask? Instead of two star-crossed lovers, it’s a tangled triangle of unrequited love! The tale is calledRomeo, Romeo and Juliet and features a rehearsal room that becomes a hilarious hothouse for palpable passion, comedic conflict, and witty repartee as only the Bard’s can do, in this fun and fizzy romantic comedy, sure to inspire the hopeless romantic in us all. It gives a whole new meaning to “O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo…errr and Romeo?”Romeo, Romeo and Juliet takes place at the Moxie Theatre, 6663 El Cajon Boulevard, fromThursday, June 14 through Sunday, July 8. For tickets and more information, call 619.728.7820 or go to theroustabouts.org.

THE KING AND I One of America’s most beloved classic musi-

cals, Rodgers and Hammerstein’sThe King and I is filled with some of Broadway’s most memorable melodies and some of musical theatre’s greatest numbers: “Hello Young Lovers,” “Getting to Know You,” “Something Wonderful,” and “Shall We Dance.” Part love story and part culture clash comedy, the story traces the blossoming romance between an English governess and the King of 19th Century Siam. Based on the novel Anna and the King of Siamby Margaret Landon, which in turn was based on autobiographical

memoirs written by Anna Leonowens, who was a schoolteacher to the children of King Mongkut of Siam in the early 1860s. It’s probably the second musical I remember seeing as a kid and the “Shall We Dance” moment between Yul Brynner and Deborah Kerr literally used to bring me to tears, so though it may have its dated moments, it’s still one of our all-time favorites. The King and I runs Tuesday June 26 through Sunday, July 1 at The San Diego Civic Theatre. Mamma Mia! Moonlight Stage Productions was an idea that began 35 years ago with nothing but a concrete stage, offering no amenities such as electric- ity, running water, or even bathrooms. It was the brainchild of Kathy Brombacher and she, along with the City of Vista worked together to create the “Vista Summer Theatre Festival,” that began in 1981 with inaugural production ofOliver! Many years and many productions later, in 2008/09 the state-of-the-art Moonlight Amphitheatre was reconstructed, making it one of San Diego County’s major theatres, now producing under the guise of Moonlight Stage Productions. Renowned for its unique house featuring lawn seating perfect for picnicking, as well as more traditional seating, Moonlight offers critically-acclaimed Broadway-quality musicals, in a beautiful outdoor setting. The San Diego regional premiere of Benny Andersson & Björn Ulvaeus’Mamma Mia! by Catherine Johnson based on the songs of ABBA, begins their 2018 performance season, running from Wednesday, June 13 through Saturday, June 30. THE SQUIRRELS From the mind of Tony Award nominee Robert Askins who brought usHand to God,

comes a world-premiere production ofThe Squirrels, directed by La Jolla Playhouse Artistic Director Christopher Ashley runningTuesday, June 5 through Sunday, July 8. No squirrel will go unharmed in this deliciously-demented new comedy. Winter is on the way and the squirrels are restless. Mistrust is growing between the rich Gray Squirrels and the outcast Fox Squirrels. When a wily outsider gets in the mix, he ignites an epic animal kingdom soap opera teeming with rebel armies, conspiracy, love and family loyalties. “This savagely funny new play is at once contemporary and Shakespearean,” noted La Jolla Playhouse Artistic Director Christopher Ashley. “Featuring a stellar, multi-talented cast and creative team, not to mention a 24-foot tree,The Squirrels touches on today’s socio-political issues through the singular lens of Rob Askins’ untethered imagination.”The Squirrels takes place at the Mandell Weiss Forum, inside the La Jolla Playhouse, 2910 La Jolla Village Drive in La Jolla.
