CAUSE OF A RAID AT THE BLACK CAT ON NEW YEAR’S DAY IN 1967.
20 RAGE monthly | JUNE 2018 A lot has happened in the 48
years since that initial march down Hollywood Boulevard: In the mid ‘80s after the incorporation of West Hollywood, the event moved to its current route down Santa Monica Boulevard, we’ve faced the AIDS epidemic, Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell and its repeal, the same-sex marriage loss and eventual Supreme Court win, along with many other human rights milestones. Pride is a time to celebrate those successes and it’s a time to remember those who came before us fighting day and night for the rights and freedoms we now enjoy. It’s also a time to remember that there is still much more that needs to be done, especially
reflected in this current political moment. So let’s celebrate and experience the joy of who we are and what we’ve managed to do, and yet remember to stay ever vigilant about those who seek to take such thing away.
L.A. Pride lists its set of values on their website, it’s a great way to remember why we have Pride celebrations and what they really represent. They are as follows:
BE AWARE. We must never forget our past. BE INSPIRED. We are all activists. BE UNITED. We are one community. BE MINDFUL. We must support each other. BE TRUE.We must be our authentic selves.
