ORANGE COUNTY PRIDE HAS HAD SOMEWHAT OF A
NOMADIC HISTORY. THE FIRST PRIDE EVENT TOOK PLACE IN
1989 IN SANTA ANA AND ENDED UP INCITING A CLASH BETWEEN ATTENDEES AND ANTI-LGBTQ PROTESTORS, FORCING LAW ENFORCEMENT TO ORDER
ORGANIZERS TO LOCK THE FES- TIVAL GATES TEMPORARILY AS THEY CONSIDERED SHUTTING DOWN THE EVENT ENTIRELY.

The next year the event moved to the U.C. Irvine campus and stayed there until the early 2000s and sadly for a time disappeared. It was resurrected in 2009 as “Picnic in the Park & the Return of Orange County Pride.” Consequently it was the same year that Prop 8 was passed. For 2010 and 2011 O.C. Pride ended up in Irvine
and finally in 2012 “Takin’ It To The Streets” marked the return of O.C. Pride to its birthplace…the streets of downtown Santa Ana, evolving into a week-long festival with events throughout the Orange County area. 2017’s “As One” O.C. Pride had a record-breaking
attendance of 23,000 and included Matt and Lori Duron, parents of a 10-year-old “gender creative” son named C.J. Their heartfelt story about raising a non-binary, LGBT child at
RaisingMyRainbow.com and on social media went viral, eventually inspiring the 2018 O.C. Pride theme, “Be You,” and resulting in him being named 2018 O.C. Pride’s Grand Marshal. Catch our conversation with C.J. on the following page. TheOrange County Pride Festival and Parade
