THE GOOD FOOD GUIDE 035
Pane e Vino – a true taste of Italy
Sophie Astin F
ollowing a break from his previous restaurant, the fabulous Peperoncino, on Tunbridge Wells’ High Street, Fabio is back – and for truly authentic Italian food, bursting with Mediterranean fl avour (including freshly baked pizzas) Pane e Vino is worth a visit. From its town centre location and clean,
relaxed interior, husband and wife owners (and chefs) Fabio and Mary have created an imaginative and mouth-watering menu with plenty to choose from. We began our lunch with antipasto: a beautifully presented selection of cheeses, cured meats and juicy olives. Freshly baked focaccia al rosmarino and enormous hot bread sticks straight from the pizza oven were served, alongside the
lightest ‘croccantine di riso’ (rice balls), oozing with melted cheese and pancetta – and the sunshine fl avours of
Napoli – washed down with a refreshing glass of Verdiccio.
Primi piatti was an exquisite dish of wide ribbons of pasta with fresh clams and prawns in a simple cherry tomato sauce – delicate and cooked to perfection. After a much- needed pause, our main courses arrived: sea bream served in a fi nely sliced potato ‘crust’, to resemble fi sh scales – the attention to detail and the fl avour was spot on. My partner chose an equally succulent
fi llet of lamb encased in spinach, Parma ham and puff pastry in a red wine jus. We
somehow managed to fi nd space for a small slice of tiramisu topped with amaretto crumb and a winter fruit panacotta! With so many ‘chain’ restaurants in
Tunbridge Wells, it’s refreshing to fi nd a traditional, family-run trattoria serving fresh, Italian dishes. Fabio produces fl avoursome, creative dishes with a Neapolitan/southern infl uence paired with an enviable Italian wine list. • Pane e Vino, 49 Grosvenor Road, Tunbridge Wells TN1 2AY, call 01892 2AY or email
