Totally Tropical Taste Advice for gardeners from Chestnut Nursery

Tropical effect plants are having a resurgence in popularity. Victorian plant collectors went to great lengths, courageously exploring the world in search of foliage and fl owers to delight the British gardener.

And here on the nursery in Poole, our courageous volunteers are growing a delightful range of tropical and sub-tropical plants so you can achieve that most wonderful effect.

We just can’t keep our eyes off Ensete ventricosum ‘Muarelii’, the giant Abyssinian banana has large fl amboyant, deep red and green leaves that can reach two and a half to three metres tall in just one growing season. Best kept in a large pot, to be enjoyed on the patio, when winter comes these tender beasts can be hacked back and dry stored in a garage or greenhouse.

Echium ‘Pink Fountain’ is a hybrid between the tender red species wildpretii, and the hardier species pininana. The result is a hardier pink biannual, which grows an attractive rosette of large grey-green leaves, before sending up its two metre high fl ower spike in its second year. Its magnifi cent blooms are a magnet for bees and wildlife. Plant your Echiums in the garden border for a dazzling display.

Canna lilies

(pictured) are exotic looking rhizomatous perennials from south Africa. They are easy to grow and require little maintenance,

offering long-lasting colour in the garden from their vibrant

yellow, red or orange fl owers and exotic foliage. They die back in the winter, but burst back into vigorous growth in the spring. Plant them as a focal point in a container or the border.

With our range of home grown exotics, we are certain your garden can feel and look like a jungle oasis.
