drive and determination. These are great traits, much appreciated by employers, but they are also intrinsically noble and virtuous qualities.

Congratulations to our talented musicians who recently performed Fauré’s Requiem in the Lytchett Minster Church.

The audience was also treated to a performance by the Senior Band of the Russian Easter Overture by Rimsky Korsakov, and eight individual items by the school’s top musicians. Of course, the talent of these students did not just blossom overnight in some miraculous transformation; it was developed through hours and hours of dedicated and at times arduous practice.

Music is just one area where we see our young people excel. At Lytchett we see outstanding talent in dance, drama, art, sport and many other areas of our curriculum. It takes real commitment to be truly successful, and this requires self-discipline,

At Lytchett we put great emphasis on educating the whole child. We want our young people to thrive and develop, not just academically, but holistically as human beings. Music and the arts in general provide us with so much pleasure; they enrich our lives in a deep and meaningful way. It is no surprise to hear that learning a musical instrument develops one’s cognitive abilities. Students who learn to read music and to play a musical instrument tend to perform better academically than their non-musical peers. This year we have launched a music scholarship scheme, generously supported by the local Cecil Charity. This gives our Year 7 students who are showing an aptitude for music, an opportunity to learn a musical instrument – without any of the associated fi nancial costs. We hope to reap the benefi ts of this scheme in years to come.
