Chairman, Len Roff: 01202 622887 Vice Chairman: Fred Drane 01202 385114 Treasurer, Andrew Starr: 01202 631161 Secretary, Sandra Williams: 01202 624561

Following our Spring Litter Pick on 8th April a resident pointed out a major litter problem in Watery Lane leading up to Policeman’s Lane. Three residents of Sandy Lane did a clear out of a stretch of no more than two hundred yards. We collected as much as we could and this amounted to over THREE HUNDRED CANS, numerous bottles, both glass and plastic, various pieces of plastic and paper and piles of stripped plastic cabling. It is a disgrace this should be happening in our community and we should be doing everything to change attitudes to leave a decent environment to future generations.

We know it is the minority that does this, but the majority needs to show we care by example. That is why we were so delighted by the turnout at our litter picks and citizens who roll up their sleeves to help out. So much effort is put in locally with Upton in Bloom, the Beacon Association and others making Upton a great place to live. We can all add to that by ensuring we keep our town litter free and nature friendly.

The Keep Upton Tidy Group held their AGM in May when the existing offi cers were re-elected and issues

arising were discussed. Dog fouling continues to be a major issue and we will liaise with the Dogs Trust to highlight our concerns and see if we can improve notices and general awareness of the problem.

A general reminder on contacts to help counter the increasing problem of fl y-tipping in the area. Purbeck Council is highlighting this issue and asking citizens to report details, but never touch such waste or confront fl y-tippers. Visit: www.dorsetforyou.com/fl ytipping; email envservices@purbeck-dc.gov.uk or call 01929 556561.

The next meeting of the Keep Upton Tidy Group will be at 6pm on Wednesday 4th July at Turbary Court in Douglas Close. If anyone would like to attend to see what we do or to raise a particular litter concern without getting too involved they would be most welcome. If you would like to come contact one of the offi cers above to make sure we are aware you are coming.

Finally we would ask residents to be vigilant and advise Dorset Waste Partnership (either online or on 01305 221040) any litter, fl y-tipping, dog fouling or overgrown pathways (or bins that have not been emptied). If you still cannot resolve the problem contact the Town Council (01202 632070) or one of the offi cers above.
