Upton In Bloom The Horticultural Show, 18th August 2018
Upton in Bloom joined forces with the Gardening Club to share a stall at the fi rst May bank holiday Fayre in the walled garden of Upton Country Park. The principal aims for both organisations was to promote their activities. We did so by focusing on the forthcoming Horticultural Show, in particular the Children’s classes – which have not been so well supported in recent years – by handing out over 100 free ‘upcycling’ packs for children to use to enter the class ‘something new from something old.’ There was material, straws, instructions and an entry form inside, so we are hoping for lots of entries for this class this year.
The stall received £128 in donations and from sales at the Fayre, and we must particularly thank one of our team members, Moya, not only for the idea, but for burning the midnight oil to put together the packs.
Pride In Your Patch
Each year Upton in Bloom awards certifi cates to our residents who have displayed (at any time of the year) an attractive front garden of any type, for the public to enjoy. If you are aware of a front garden that deserves an award, please let us know by contacting Lynn (01202 622046), Ray (01202 623595), June (01202

Recycling & Conservation
The TV series, The Blue Planet, has had an incredible impact on virtually all walks of life, from the government to the man in the Street. We have taken the opportunity to tap into this enthusiastic response by using it as the theme for this year’s school Eco- Poetry Competition. It will be interesting to see what our young people make of the state of the world which, unfortunately, we adults have created, and what solutions they might suggest. We have also decided as an organisation, that we need to look at ways in which we can be more effi cient and less wasteful in the use of resources.
In the meantime, if we wish to play our part on a daily basis, then the Dorset Waste Partnership has a very handy guide to reducing waste, by for example, making full use of its recycling facilities. Copies of the leafl et “slim your bins….and save money” are available at:
