Festival Mondial des Théâtres de Marionnettes September 20-29, 2019
Every two years, the Ardennes city of Charleville-Mézières stages one of the biggest puppet festivals in the world. From satire to dramatic narratives, it’s all part and parcel of the Festival Mondial des Théâtres de Marionnettes, a nine-day bonanza of puppetry typically attracting more than 150,000 visitors. Expect street theatre (with audience participation – you have been warned!) plus a roster of more structured performances. You won’t be disappointed.

MIMOS July 23-28, 2018
On stage, a woman weeps, cheers and dances wordlessly, her face a shifting canvas of expression. Another transforms into a bird with an enthralling fl urry of feathers, then a tiger with fangs and fur. This is none other than MIMOS, France’s
international mime festival. Held annually in Périgueux, Dordogne, this captivating spectacle marks its 36th year with a diverse line-up of performances from 22 companies. It’s hard to pick a favourite, but we would recommend Grrrrr, Dévaste- Moi and Dr Nest if you want to have your imagination thoroughly tickled!

Nice Carnival February 16-28, 2019 This two-week celebration leading up to Mardi Gras is a wondrous marriage of art, dance, music and frivolity. Performers dazzle in elaborate costumes while confetti showers the crowd; hundreds of fl owers are thrown to spectators in the ‘Bataille de Fleurs’ and – perhaps most striking of all – a series of fl oats seating colossal papier- mâché or animatronic fi gures are presented in the main parade. Next year’s carnival will revolve around the theme ‘King of Cinema’, although we can’t help but wonder whether ‘Queens’ are fair game too – after all, this all takes place in Nice, a short jaunt from Saint-Tropez, where Brigitte Bardot famously wowed in And God Created Woman.
