LEISURE Cannes Yachting Festival September 11-16, 2018 Dripping with glamour, the Cannes Yachting Festival is an occasion for boating enthusiasts to fawn over the latest models in one of France’s ritziest locations. Stretching from one end of the famous Croisette to the other – from the Vieux Port to Port Pierre Canto – this year’s event sees a whopping 500 yachts and 100 sailing boats on display, so potential buyers will be spoilt for choice. There’s also the Luxury Gallery to peruse – a space dedicated to high-end products including art, jewellery, furniture and spirits.

La Fête Nationale July 14, 2018
Often known as ‘Bastille Day’ outside France, this national holiday commemorates the events set in motion after the storming of the Bastille in 1789. A year later, in 1790, the Fête de la Fédération was held to champion national unity – and it’s this proud patriotic spirit that’s exhibited in La Fête Nationale (also referred to as Le 14 Juillet) to this day. Numerous festivities take place around the country to mark the occasion. Here are some of the more famous: Military parade Held in the morning, this long-held tradition formally heralds Bastille Day in France. Around 7,000 soldiers march down the avenue des Champs-Élysées from the Arc de Triomphe to the place de la Concorde in an impressive procession that has taken place here since 1880.
