THE VINE Greetings from Spartanburg, South Carolina! Welcome to the

new issue of KUDZOO Magazine. As always, we thank you for reading. This time out we celebrate the great Capricorn Records band Cowboy, one of the best. Back ten years ago, Johnny Sandlin had a mind to reunite the original members of Cowboy to record an all new album, and before you could say “Please Be with Me,” Tommy Talton, Scott Boyer and the rest of the band had assembled at Sandlin’s Duck Tape Studios in Decatur, Alabama to begin recording. I count it among my biggest honors ever that I was invited down for the event and allowed to hang with the guys before, during and after recording. I was there for the sessions with the original band, while I was un- able to attend the second half of sessions which included later Cowboy mem- bers including Bill Stewart and Randall Bramblett. The album was amazing, but due to contracts and red tape, it was

not released. Until now. The album, titled 10’ll Getcha Twenty, is being re- leased this month. To celebrate the occasion, we went back and reprinted my story on the recording which originally appeared in my book Prisoner of Southern Rock (Mercer University Press). We are also happy to share some of the many photos I took during the sessions. We also have a review of the new album, all in this very issue. The release is somewhat bittersweet, in that producer Johnny Sandlin, bassist George Clark and co-band leader Scott Boyer left us before the album could be released. Still, it stands as a fine trib- ute to a great southern band. One of the best, actually. Also this issue we remember the guitar great Ace Moreland, one hell

of a nice guy and a fantastic guitarist and singer/songwriter. Ace was an- other artist we lost much too soon. In the article, he discussed his old friends, the late Steve and Cassie Gaines of Lynyrd Skynyrd fame, as well as his (at the time) young friend and future Allman Brother, Derek Trucks. We also list our Top 25 Southern Rock albums of all time, a list which

honestly, remains in a state of constant flux. That said, the Top 2-3 remain pretty constant. E-mail us with your opinions! We invite your input. Also, Tom Bell shares photos from the latest Rock Legends Cruise; The Rock and Roll Health Chick talks sugar; we take you to concerts that include Volunteer Jam, the Silver Travis Band, and a classic rock three-fer featuring Styx, REO Speedwagon and Don Felder; all of this plus the usual CD, DVD and book reviews. I would be remiss not to mention the fact that I have new recordings

released for the first time in 13 years. The Austin Sessions is a four song EP of original tunes produced in Texas by Billy Eli and Jim Hemphill, and Makin’ it Back to Macon was recorded and produced by Capricorn legend Paul Hornsby, with guest artists including Tommy Talton, Billy Bob Thorn- ton and EG Kight, as well as Greg Yeary, Towson Engsberg (Crosstown All- stars), Joey Parrish and Daniel Clayton (Silver Travis Band), Billy Eli and Hal Brandstetter. I hope you guys will check out both albums! The Southern Rock Hall of Fame now has a Board of Directors and

we are working hard on future plans for a physical museum as well as our first induction ceremony. Watch for updates in KUDZOO and on the official site at www.southernrockhalloffame.org Until next time, y’all keep on rockin’! Buffalo michaelbuffalosmith@gmail.com
