ROCK & ROLL HEALTH CHICK by Electra Posada

“LOOKS LIKE WE MADE IT!” I’ll be honest. I like

some musicians others consider totally cheesy, including Barry Manilow, who had a very popular hit in “Looks Like We Made It” in

1976. It’s sappy, but I’m a romantic at heart. Being a child of the late 60s/70s, I grew up with the best music there has been, and I em- braced most of it. I know we are still losing musicians at an alarming rate, but looks like we at least made it ‘til the next Kudzoo, so now is my chance to get back to you with the basics!

If you’ve been following The Rock-n-

Roll Health Chick and listening to Rockin’ Your Health, you know the drill. Cut back and ideally quit sugar, simple carbohydrates, junk “food,” harmful drugs and alcohol for optimal health. We’ve also covered the need for regu- lar sleep patterns, a big part of proper func- tioning physically and mentally, detoxifying and regeneration. Keeping healthy social con- nections keeps us mentally happier. Life on the road and growing older make all of these things extremely difficult for our bodies and minds to handle. When we’re young, we can take more

abuse and neglect and feel like we have recov- ered. We are still doing damage. Once we’re past a certain age, our bodies and minds are much less tolerant and forgiving of abuse and neglect. We are slower to heal/regenerate. It

takes more attention to keep our flexibility, mobility and mental acuity. Our digestive sys- tem gets more sensitive. Our organs get abused and worn and cause a cascade of health issues. Of course, life on the road is naturally an all-out assault to a structured lifestyle. It takes structure to fully implement the healthiest of lifestyles, But my mission is to support you in merging the two as best you can. Your mind and body will shower you with appreciation and your performance will reflect the commitment you’ve made to your- self.

Not only are diet and sleep critical, but

movement is as well. Any of the older rockers can tell you all about that! Keeping yourself in good physical shape at a younger age can truly give you more years of better strength, better flexibility, better posture, healthier joints and less pain. Yoga is great for this. It doesn’t take up much space, doesn’t need spe- cial equipment and heals your mind along with your body. There are even chair versions for people who aren’t as able-bodied. Starting slow and steady can lead to a wider range of motion, more strength, flexibility, weight loss and a calmer mind. My husband and I started a “radio sta-

tion,” ElectraLandRadio.net, where we broad- cast live concerts, record them for future play, add interviews and have a 24/7 playlist of music from the local, regional and anywhere bands that we have covered live. We consider Heartwood Soundstage to be our “home base.” Early on in our venture, I went to the “Green Room” to find the band Forlorn Strangers for permission to play/promote, and found the girls outside doing yoga! What a wonderful idea! Not only does it help them keep their lovely shape and impressive legs,
