‘Local hero’ accolade for long-serving lifeboatman

A MAN who has given 16 years’ service to Looe RNLI has been named a ‘local hero’.

Lifeboat helm Clive Palfrey was presented with the Cornish Coastal Rescue award at the Local Heroes event hosted by Pirate FM.

Clive has been one of the main players in a project to encourage more fishermen to wear lifejackets with built-in locator beacons, said Nick Pope, who nominated him for the accolade. Clive has helped to design and implement the equipment, which saves lives by enabling fishermen to be located and rescued much more quickly.

Clive’s role in various major rescues off the Cornish coast and his longstanding commitment as a volunteer with the Looe Lifeboat were all highlighted during the ceremony.

In accepting the award, Clive

recalled some of the shouts lifeboat crews have been involved with over the years.

He has first-hand knowledge of incidents which have ended in tragedy for the fishing community and he explained how life jackets, fitted with locator beacons, can alert the coastguard service immediately the incident unfolds and help to direct lifeboat crews quicker to a specific search area.

Projects

Clive said he felt he was ‘receiving the award on behalf of all the organisations involved in the project’.

He is currently working with Torbay and Cornwall councils on similar projects and his ambition is for similar safety equipment to be provided to fishermen across the whole of the country.

With the cast dressed in ‘appropriate’ costumes and accompanied by sound effects, there was

much laughter and enjoyment.

The plot centred around four boys tunnelling out of a St Trinian’s-style girls school while avoiding tasers and the school tiger.

The radio play was written and produced by Chris and Paula Roy
