Third of first-time strokes

happen in middle age According to Public Health England, 38 per cent of first-time strokes now affect middle-aged adults (between 40 - 69 years). Indeed, more first-time strokes are now happening at an earlier age compared to a decade ago, suggests PHE. “Stroke is still one of the leading causes of death in

England,” says Professor Julia Verne, a director at PHE. “While it’s often associated with older people, the latest

research shows that people are having strokes at a younger age. Everyone needs to be aware of the signs. Calling 999 as soon as you see even one of the symptoms develop – in the face, arms and speech – is essential. “Speedy treatment will help prevent deaths and disability.” The Act FAST campaign highlights the main symptoms of

stroke and the importance of calling for an ambulance immediately if you notice any single one of the symptoms in yourself or in others:

• Face – has their face fallen on one side? Can they smile?

• Arms – can they raise both their arms and keep them there?

• Speech – is their speech slurred? • Time to call 999.

Stress affects a quarter of

young British adults Being stressed is a way of life for many people, but according to a report from marketing research specialist Mintel, the nation’s 16 - 24 year-olds may have more than their fair share. The company’s Managing Healthy Lifestyles UK report

suggests 85 per cent of all Brits are affected by anxiety or stress at least sometimes. But young adults aged 16 - 24 are the most affected, with 25 per cent saying they feel anxious or stressed every day. On the plus side, only nine per cent of people aged 55

and older say they’re stressed, with a quarter saying they experience no stress whatsoever. If you're feeling stressed, try these stress management tips from the NHS:

• Try mindfulness – studies have found it may reduce stress and improve mood.

• Use calming breathing exercises.

• Download some relaxation and mindfulness apps onto your phone.

• Share your problems with family or friends.

• Take some regular exercise and make sure you're eating healthily.

• Make sure you're getting enough sleep.

Trying to lose weight? Eat more slowly

Eating more slowly could help you lose weight, along with cutting out after-dinner snacks and not eating within two hours of going to sleep, say experts writing in the online journal BMJ Open. Changes in these eating

habits are strongly associated with lower obesity and body mass

index (BMI), and smaller waist circumference, say the researchers. The study involved nearly

60,000 people and found those who eat at a normal speed are 29 per cent less likely to be obese, rising to 42 per cent among those who eat slowly.
