Water company’s plan for old newsprint site
PLANS that South East Water hopewill transformtheAylesford Newsprint site into a facility to help them provide water for the next 60 years have beenwelcomed by the local parish council. Thewater company held an exhi-
bition in the village last month to showcase the plans for a newwater treatmentworks and awater re-use scheme on the site. The site has been empty for three
years since Aylesford Newsprint went bust, with the loss of more than 200 jobs. But South EastWater’s vision for
supplyingwater to the area up until 2080 includes two plans for the site. NeilHarris, the clerk ofAylesford
Parish Council, is in favour of the scheme in principle. “It was a very interesting exhibi-
tion,” he said. “We had already had a presentation from them, and hopefully it can get sorted out. “As a parish council, we would
welcome this use for the site – we have said before thatwewould like to see something on it that brings jobs, rather than newhousing. “I must admit I don’t know a lot
about the water supply, but these look like good plans.” A consultation on the plans –
which also include works further afield in East Sussex and elsewhere inKent – is open untilMay 21,with another planned exhibition in Ec- cles nextmonth. South EastWater’s head ofwater
resources LeeDance (pictured)was on hand tomeet customers and res- idents throughout the day andwas pleasedwith howitwent. “Iwould like to thank the 29 peo-
ple who took the time to come along to our public consultation event atAylesford,” he said. “We were able to break down
some very complex information to ensure those who came along fully understoodwhatwe are proposing.
We were also able to gain valuable insights and feedback from the community on the local areawhich we can feed into our final plan. “Our consultation still has six
weeks left to run so I urge all those who would like to know more to take a look at ourwebsite andmake their voice heard by submitting their comments. Following feed- back we will also be holding a fur- ther community event at Eccles earlyMay andwill provide further information once the details are confirmed.” Full information on the proposals
