Brenda Harris BRENDA Harris (85), ofWeavering,met
with outstanding sporting successes. Slight in stature but high in natural ball
talent, in her youth she excelled at netball (representing Brighton and Hove High School), hockey and tennis. But her forte was
golf.With a handicap in her prime of 5 she met withmany competitive successes as amember of Bearsted Golf Club. She and husband Timjoined in 1970,
she was ladies’ captain in 1985 and supported Timas president from2007 to 2010. Her early career was with an estate
agent in Barclays Bank in Brighton, but aftermarriage in 1956, Tim’s business brought themtoMaidstone, first to Willington Street and then toWeavering. Brenda was a volunteer with Save the
Children, helped in theirMaidstone shop for 28 years and only her illness prevented her fromreceiving a certificate from PrincessAnne last year. She helped with patient trolleys in
Maidstone Hospital for 14 years and was also a keenmember ofMaidstone’s Inner Wheel. She leaves Tim, children Debbie,
Andrew, Julie and Stuart, eight grandchildren and eight great- grandchildren.
SylviaAnn Prior
SYLVIAAnn Prior (79) lived in Vinters Park for 45 years. Born Sylvia Kirrage in Lambeth, south
London, she grew up in the capital and married husband Fred. She worked as a
seamstress, including forMarks & Spencer, beforemoving to the Maidstone area from NewMalden, Surrey, when Fred got a job inAshford. Sylvia raised
children Tina, Steven and Kevin and also worked for Unigate – presenting a range of food items in local supermarkets – and school cleaning. Fred said: “Sylvia had the kind of
generosity that overwhelmed people and a smile that could light up a room. She could talk to anyone fromany walk of life. “Outside of her family – who always
came first in her life – she loved her garden and being among her flowers.” Sylvia leaves her husband, children,
seven grandchildren and three great- grandchildren.
PatriciaWakefield
PATRICIA “Pat”Wakefield (83), nee Parfi�, lived inAllington for 16 years. She and husband Johnmoved to Barming fromHayes End inMiddlesex, in 1964 for John’s job. The pair weremarried for 56 years and
were parents to Steven and Tracy. After bringing up her children, Pat
returned to work as a school dinner lady at Barming school and later as a ward clerk whenMaidstone Hospital opened. John said: “Pat was good at baking and
sewing and was a very giving and caring person. She looked after her family, who always came first.” Pat leaves her husband and children.
PeterWilding Jones
PETERWilding Jones (87) lived in central Maidstone for 50 years. Before that he lived in Headcorn, where his father was the local postmaster. Having earned a scholarship to Su�on Valence School, Peter began work in the Post Office with his father. He went on to work
in a number of local roles, including a sales job with Vaughans fireplace shop on Tonbridge Road (which was then
on the opposite side of the road to the current shop), 25 years working for the print union SOGAT and finally in a garage on Rawdon Road, Tovil, where he filled

cars for customers. Peter wasmarried to Ivy for 65 years,
and the couple spent 73 years together, having started their romance as teenagers. He was father to Peter, Sally and Katherine (Kate). Kate said: “My father was an intelligent
and creative person who wrote poetry, which was used on family occasions, and painted pictures. “His ability to be articulate and solve
problems was a great asset in his union work, but his creative talents were put to many uses. One which satisfied himthe most was when he finally got to play Santa Claus to a play group, where the audience included two of his granddaughters. He was so good that even they didn’t spot him. “He was involved and active to the end
of his life. He andmymother ran an over 60s club at the Rosemary GrahamCentre, in Parkwood, when they were in their late 70s.” Peter leaves his wife, children, 12
grandchildren and 19 great- grandchildren.
John andMarina
Morrison THE deaths of John andMarinaMorrison (84 and 83 respectively) occurred within a fortnight of each other. The pair – who lived in Fant – were
well-known locally as stalwarts of Labour politics, with four decades asmembers and campaigners for Labour causes. Both had fought election campaigns and
John held the ParkWood ward from1980 to 2002, in one election polling 71% of the votes. He also spent a year from2002 as elected representative for Fant. A joint funeral took place at Vinters
Park Crematorium, withmany of the couple’s peers and Labour colleagues in a�endance.
Joy Sage
THE death has been reported of former local head teacher Joy Sage (79). Born in Lamberhurst, Joy worked in the
local area as a teacher and – eventually – deputy head ofAllington Primary School, from1982 to 1999. Joy leaves her husband Roger and sons Barry and Colin.
