MARCH/APRIL 2018 THE RIDER /63 Equine Photography Workshop, Winter Edition
Held at Travis Hall Equestrian Centre, Fergus Sunday Feb. 18, 2018
By Sylvia Galbraith Photography and horses just seem to go together. Their stun-
ning beauty always amazes, and who doesn’t love to watch them gallop through the snow, manes and tails streaming and heads held high. With bright blue skies and pure white snow as the backdrop, the scene becomes magical, and being able to photograph it well adds to the enjoyment. Besides, it sure beats riding around the arena
in endless circles, waiting for spring. This set the tone for my Winter
Equine Photography Workshop, held at Travis Hall Equestrian Cen- tre near Fergus, on February 18, 2018. Under a brilliant blue sky, and with fresh powdery snow under- foot, nine participants spent the day learning how to photograph horses in imaginative ways while taking advantage of the spectacular winter scenery. Starting with a slide show and lecture, the discussion centered around equipment and camera set- tings, but quickly moved into learn- ing shooting techniques for action photos, portraits of horses and peo- ple, and free-running “wild horse” photos. Travis Hall generously sup- plied a collection of horses in every size and colour imaginable, and their dedicated riders were on hand to provide fast-paced action over fences. After an hour or so in the arena, it was time for the best part…
a few of the more lively models were set free in a three-acre field, and blasted around, bucking and kicking, with snow flying, and a few exciting “I hope they don’t jump the fence” moments. A per- fect ‘photo op”, and no one got away, either. The Johnsons from Travis Hall and their rid-
ers – Olivia, Mallory, Melanie, Maisie, and Shae- lynn, went out of their way to make sure everything ran smoothly. They host these work- shops a couple of times a year, with the next one planned for this summer. If your barn would like to host an equine photo clinic, feel free to get in touch…. I’m always happy to come to you too. For more information and registration details on this or some of my other photography workshops, check out my schedule, or contact me at
