Mondi reinvents packaging for ventilation systems

billion by 2021 as manufacturers increasingly use it for heavy products. Typical was the packaging for

heavy-duty ventilation systems developed by Mondi Wellpappe Ansbach last year which won the German Packaging Award in the ‘economic efficiency’ category. Ebm-papst Mulfingen, the global

leader in air and drive technology innovations, approached Mondi Wellpappe Ansbach to look into the use of its two-piece stacking corner system for packaging axial flow fans, with a focus on improved material efficiency and handling.

he global demand for corrugated board packaging is expected to grow to US$269

An additional assignment was to ensure compliance with the top load requirements for international truck and container shipping. When transporting industrial

ventilation systems, up to six items are stacked and stretch wrapped for shipping. To achieve better handling efficiency and material usage, the new stacking corners are made from one piece of cardboard. As a result, the customer achieved a 30 per cent reduction in material usage. Furthermore, assembly time is almost halved which offers time savings of 17 hours per 1,000 packaged fans. Helmut Breuer, managing director

at Mondi Wellpappe Ansbach, said, “By paying careful attention to our customer’s needs, we made

sure the new solution would be a perfect fit – right from the start. We carried out a thorough pilot testing phase in close cooperation with Ebm-papst Mulfingen to verify that the one-piece solution prototypes met their production line and transport requirements. “No changes to the prototypes

were necessary and the benefits of the new solution were apparent immediately. In the end, we managed to meet our client’s expectations and, ultimately, turned their challenge into a new concept with added value – in keeping with our mission to never stop improving.”

Low-odour binder for food and liquid packaging boards

A binder for paper coatings, based on styrene butadiene, has been specifically designed by BASF for odour-sensitive applications in the board and packaging market in the Nordic region.

Although applicable for all

printing applications, the low- odour product is particularly suitable for food-contact and liquid packaging board. The XSB binder is characterised by its

low content of volatile organic compounds. It complies with all relevant eco label and food contact requirements. “The enhancement of our product line is a clear demonstration of our commitment to the paper and board industry. Our new binder enables best runnability in typical customer applications and with all common recipe formulations,” says Professor Thomas Schiele, vice president of BASF’s Paper Coating Chemicals Europe. “It expands BASF’s paper coating chemicals product portfolio and meets customers’ requirements as well as increasingly stringent

regulatory conditions.” BASF has also launched new high solid binders, which will be manufactured at its plant at Hamina in Finland. The binders, characterised by a solid content of up to 55 per cent, help to reduce carbon dioxide emissions during transportation of the binder and during drying of the formulated coating colour. The new high solid binders are said to capable of helping to reduce complexity in handling and ordering processes and are suitable for demanding applications with high performance requirements.
