flexibility, they can be modified for a range of crops and misshapen produce, thereby reducing the potential for bruising and skin damage that can sometimes occur with rigid packaging. And, like all corrugated packaging, CFQ trays are perfectly designed for displaying goods with the consequent increase in sales. The UK Corrugated Industry has become an increasingly lean manufacturer and productivity has increased by 40 per cent in the last decade. This is also an industry that is investing in its own future – in recent years almost £500million has been invested in new machinery and equipment by UK box manufacturers.
Corrugated, a sustainable and renewable material Now consider the fact that more than 80 per cent of all corrugated cardboard packaging is recycled at the end of its life – this superb recycling rate saves an area the
size of Greater London from landfill every four months – and the result is an ideal supply chain solution for modern commercial organisations that are seeking to demonstrate their environmental credentials. Environmental impact goes
beyond the packaging itself and includes the area of food waste, which has a far greater environmental impact than the packaging itself. It is important to remember that packaging prevents food waste. For years, the corrugated packaging industry has been developing packaging and logistics solutions to preserve the quality and hygiene of food. This is an industry that is constantly refining its packaging to ensure that it is fit for purpose and satisfies the needs of the consumers. Corrugated packaging has been
serving society for more than 130 years and is now responsible for protecting more than 75 per cent of Europe’s goods in transit. While

improvements with a supplier and was able to streamline its production process, implementing a solution that resulted in a 50 per cent increase in throughput and cost savings on secondary packaging materials by eliminating the need for additional plastic transit packaging. So corrugated packaging brings

the primary function is transporting goods, the material’s more recent evolution into a key component of retail marketing enables corrugated packaging to provide a more flexible supply chain approach. A simple case study demonstrates
the value of corrugated packaging. A major UK food producer discussed various process
superb environmental credentials to its conventional markets of fast moving consumer goods, food & drink packaging and industrial applications. Whichever sector a customer may
be in, as companies and consumers seek to reduce their environmental impact, and as legislators lead us towards the Circular Economy, it is worth remembering that it already exists: paper & board is renewable, efficient in transit and already collected and recycled all over Europe.
