National Council for Voluntary Organisations

Some of you may recall that at the Association Assembly in July 2016 we listened to speaker Chloe Stables from NVCO explaining the purpose of the national body. Hopefully this ‘refresher’ will confirm the importance of its role and fill in gaps for those not present.

WHEN did start? WANT to know more about

It began in 1919 as the National Council of Social Service using a legacy from Edward Vivian Birchall who died of his wounds in France in WW1. Many charities such as Age Concern, Citizens Advice Bureau and Community Matters started with NCVO.

WHAT is ?

The National Council for Voluntary Organisations is a non- profit making organisation which champions the volunteering sector and volunteering because it believes volunteering is essential for a better society.

HOW does help volunteers?

• It provides expert support and advice saving time and keeping you up to date with news which may affect voluntary work

• It connects organisations with people and partners and the resources they need to make a difference

• It supports the voluntary sector and volunteering generally and identifies best knowledge and support

• It represents the voluntary sector and volunteering to government demonstrating the value of volunteering and helping to influence policy makers

WHERE does operate?

Centrally through the NCVO website and Headquarters office in All Saints Street, Kings Cross in London and locally through area offices near you.

WHY should Inner Wheel belong to ?

Inner Wheel in GB&I pays a membership fee and is represented by Anthea Tilsley and formerly by Zena Coles (IPAP).

The NCVO website has a wealth of information, expertise and knowledge to help in the Leadership and Management of smaller and larger voluntary organisations. Staff are accessible and helpful over a range of topics.

These can cover the complexities of new Data Protection legislation to be implemented from May 2018 to how to maximise fundraising opportunities by disposing of old £1 coins.

(NCVO refers specifically to England. Scotland has the SCVO, Wales has WCVA while in Northern Ireland it is the NICVA. For the rest of Ireland, volunteer.ie provides information. All of these organisations have websites providing details.)

More Sky Diving Exploits

After a false start owing to cloudy weather, President Pauline Summers of the Inner Wheel Club of Alfreton (District 22) was finally able to take to the skies for a tandem skydive in aid of her chosen charity – “Dukes Barn”, an outdoor centre based in Derbyshire which mainly caters for young people with disabilities.

Monthly updates and blogs help Inner Wheel receive important news to think outside the box and be prepared for change.

The NCVO “lobbies” Government about legislation which affects the charity sector.
