Visit to TS “Royalist” in Weymouth Harbour

During 2016, a large amount was raised by the ladies of the Inner Wheel Club of Crewkerne towards bursaries enabling young local Sea Cadets to gain practical onshore and offshore life- enriching experiences. They also gain the necessary life skills while on board the Training Ship “Royalist”.

This year, while “Royalist” was in Weymouth Harbour, we were kindly invited on board to meet the young cadets and see around the boat. We also appreciated how they lived and worked in quite cramped conditions. They were most charming and answered all our questions very knowledgably.

Hereford Wye Valley Inter-Club Lunch

Our speaker, Jules Hudson, was the main attraction at the Inter-Club Lunch hosted by Hereford Wye Valley Club in October. His presence had many of the ladies getting quite excited! He didn’t disappoint us and was very relaxed, although a little overwhelmed with just how many of us there were, especially the ladies who came from all the other Clubs in our District.

Jules started by telling us he was an Essex boy having been brought up in and around Colchester where his love for archaeology and history began, as well as his love for the great outdoors. He went to Lampeter University in West Wales, fell in love with the country and eventually bought a tumbled down cottage. He renovated it and enjoyed escaping there. He lived in Wales for 22 years. He first began his career helping to produce various programmes, but a chance meeting led to him becoming a presenter on such programmes as “Countryfile” and “Escape to the Country”. He enjoyed the ad lib approach and has worked on “Escape to the Country” for ten years.

As we already knew, Jules lives in Herefordshire and is happily married with a wife, two-year old son and two Labradors and thoroughly enjoys living on the borders of Wales and England. He writes a column in the Welsh Borders magazine and has also written a book which is due out next April. He is President of the Campaign for the Protection of Rural Wales which enables rural communities to survive by keeping schools going, as well as addressing other environmental issues.

There were lots of interesting questions, with one Inner Wheel visitor telling us she had in fact applied to go on the programme, but unfortunately had not been successful. Jules told us there is no such thing as a perfect house, but to be nearly perfect you have to “Embrace its Imperfections”, which is very true!

Everyone was so kind and helpful and I don’t think the young Sea Cadets could believe us ladies of more mature years being able to get round their boat! I have to give a special mention to Muriel Haddon who in her eighties certainly made the most of her visit! She was very well looked after by Ady Rhodes and Hannah Robinson, head of Yeovilton Sea Cadets and of course by all the young cadets on board.

Beat says Thank you!

A representative from BEAT was present at the Council Meeting in October to receive a further cheque from Association Past President Zena Coles. In accepting this, he said that Inner Wheel’s determination to do good was equalled by the fun they seemed to have in doing so. Zena had enjoyed seeing where the money was being used, particularly for the helpline based in Warrington, which could now be staffed from 3 till 10 each day.
