Indian Cookery Demonstration
President Maggie and members of the Hereford Wye Valley Club welcomed many friends and guests to an Indian Cookery Demonstration given by Rayeesa Asghar-Sandys. This was a fund-raising event for President Maggie’s chosen charity, Heartstart Herefordshire. This voluntary organisation teaches the people of Herefordshire Emergency Life Support (ELS) skills. These abilities are the actions needed to keep someone alive until professional help arrives. The charity’s instructors are volunteers from various walks of life, all with the same notion – to save lives. They have trained more than 21,000 people of all age ranges and backgrounds and need our help to continue to provide emergency life support skills to the people, schools and communities of Herefordshire.
After a career in the Metropolitan Police, Rayeesa moved to Herefordshire and set up a cookery school teaching others how to bring her passion for Indian cooking to life in their own kitchens. Seeing that there was nothing on the supermarket shelves to make healthy meals which were quick and tasty for her family, she decided to create her own curry sauces. These are prepared with no additives or preservatives, are low in fat and salt, and are immediately frozen.
Whilst preparing and cooking the most delicious onion bhajis for us, Rayeesa described her recent experience of taking part in the ‘Dragons’ Den’ TV programme. Although unsuccessful in obtaining funding from the Dragons, they were full of praise and valuable advice for the progression of her business. Rayeesa’s determination and her infectious enthusiasm for her products will no doubt ensure that her business grows and develops in the future. Her products are already stocked locally.
All who attended the demonstration then enjoyed a delicious chicken curry with rice and pakoras prepared by Rayeesa. This was followed by an amazing selection of delicious puddings provided by members. All in all this was a very successful social event which gave us the opportunity to showcase the work of our Inner Wheel Club whilst raising a marvellous sum for Heartstart Herefordshire.
Carol Langstaff, Hereford Wye Valley Scottie’s Sky Dive
The President of Newton and District Jubilee Inner Wheel, based in Culcheth, Cheshire, has recently completed a Sky Dive for Charity. What is so remarkable is that Moira (Scottie) Peter is in her eightieth year!
The background to this is that when Scottie was 70 she asked her husband Ron and family for a Sky Dive to commemorate two friends who had died of cancer and a friend who had recently been diagnosed with the disease. The sponsorship money she collected went to a cancer charity.
Scottie enjoyed the Sky Dive so much that she promised to repeat this when reaching 80 years old. With some reluctance from the family, it was arranged for early September this year at Cockerham near Lancaster. Scottie went for the training for the tandem jump with her instructor. Unfortunately, and very tragically, the man did a jump a week later and suffered complications with his parachute and died.
Even this did not put Scottie off and on Sunday 24th September she successfully completed the jump. In doing so, Scottie has raised a large sum for the ‘Help the Heroes’ charity. This is something very close to her heart. She feels that we do not do enough for the soldiers who risk their lives every day for us. She is already organising events to mark her year as president. For example, a fashion show is planned for early next year. Scottie is a truly remarkable lady!

Lady Golding Parachute Jump
On a sunny Sunday afternoon in late September, Lady Golding recorded her third Parachute jump for the Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire. Members of Wakefield Inner Wheel Club sponsored their teddy bear (Lady Golding) as part of the Rotary organised event. She was made by Pauline Gallivan, the International Service Organiser. As you can see, Lady G is smartly dressed in blue and yellow and wears lovely pantaloons as well as a few jewels! She survived the exhilarating experience and has so far raised a goodly sum from sponsorship which will go to the Forget Me Not Hospice.
