Shades of “TITANIC”
Marlow Rotary and Inner Wheel Clubs share the organising of a Senior Citizens' Boat Trip on the River Thames every year. Inner Wheel's contribution is to make and serve 150 Afternoon Teas to the invited guests. Here are Inner Wheel President Judith Elliot and Rotary President Peter Turner trying to enact a scene from the film “Titanic”.
Joan Clerehugh – Inner Wheel Club of Marlow MoC in Lycra Londonderry’s Success Story
Just what does your Member of Council do in her spare time?
Isobel Wilkinson, member of Berkhamsted Bulbourne Inner Wheel, MOC for District 26, is also a member of her local cycling club. The recent Tour of Britain race had its penultimate stage from Hemel Hempstead to Cheltenham and four local clubs were asked to choose a representative group from their members to lead out the peleton. Issy was honoured to be selected but she did say to her Club Chairman, “Do you really want an old woman on an e-bike to represent the Club?” His answer was definite! “You are a great ambassador for the club.”
Issy is the oldest member in her cycling club of over 220 members and the only one with an e-bike which helps her to keep up with younger and fitter members. So, ladies of Inner Wheel, one way to get publicity for our wonderful organisation is to get on your Lycra/padded shorts and go cycling!
The Inner Wheel Club of Londonderry is now nearly 70 years old and is an example of the powerful friendship of Inner Wheel. Some years ago, its membership had slumped to just six members. However, through energy, enthusiasm and the obvious friendship of these members it has grown from strength to strength as word spread about the good works and fellowship of the group - and the membership is now over 30.
They have a quilting and craft fair at Christmas and every member draws on her own skill set to find a way to help others less fortunate.
This year the club decided that Mary’s Meals would be its international charity and contacted David Heneghan, an Accountant who previously lived in Edinburgh. He was attempting a fundraising cycle ride on the Wild Atlantic Way from Mizen Head in Cork to Malin Head in Donegal, a distance of 2,100 kilometres taking him on a stunning scenic journey. He was travelling unsupported and planned to achieve this in 15 days. He did!
When President Mar Hasson of the Londonderry club got in touch with him she found he was already aware of Mary’s Meals, having spent some time in Malawi helping to build and renovate classrooms for children. He was delighted to support Inner Wheel Londonderry with their Mary’s Meals initiative.
