Flying The Flag For A Centenarian
On 9th August, one of our very special members, Olive Gray, celebrated her 100th birthday. To mark this amazing achievement, Blackburn Club held an Inner Wheel Afternoon tea for her, following their Handover meeting on 4th July. Olive is a remarkable lady, who continues to attend meetings and events whenever possible and takes an active part in all discussions. She is an invaluable source of information about former members and can recall many events from the past, some with great humour, having been a member of Blackburn club for 52 years. Olive is always smartly dressed and is an inspiration to us mere youngsters who are mostly in our 70s and 80s!
Olive celebrated her birthday officially with a lunch with her family after collecting her birthday card from the Queen. She stated that she supposed it was a big achievement to reach her 100th birthday, but she didn't really see it that way as she just got up in the morning and got on with it! Olive has a daughter Jean, who lives locally and a son, Geoffrey, who lives in Phoenix, Arizona. A resident here can ask his Congressman to request that the national flag be flown in Washington to mark a family Centenarian's birthday and Olive has a card showing the Stars and Stripes flag flown in her honour above the US Capital! She lives in residential accommodation which allows her to maintain her independence and an active lifestyle. She is a crossword fan and claims the key to a long and happy life is to be honest and stay active. Although a widow for ten years, she remains a partner in her husband's business.
Noreen Oakley – Inner Wheel Club of Blackburn
The Inner Wheel Club of Cupar (D1) had as one of their guest speakers Community Safety Officer PC Keith McLeod, who presented a very informative and engaging talk on personal, home and handbag safety. He touched on the safe keeping of handbags and purses as well as what to do to keep safe when travelling either on public transport or using one’s own car. His tips included planning your journey beforehand, checking over the car before leaving, looking at windows and tyres and spotting oil leaks. His advice was to hide handbags in the foot well of the car or behind the seat, lock the car when driving, sit in an aisle seat on public transport and pay at the kiosk when getting fuel.
With regard to home security, as well as keeping the doors locked and keys out of doors and windows, he advocated the use of alarms, and timers for lights and radios as lights and sounds in properties can provide a deterrent for potential intruders.
The ladies were very interested to hear about card defenders. These wallets protect your cards’ data from RFID scanners (contactless) increasingly being used by fraudsters. PC McLeod finished off his talk by advising the ladies, “Never put up a fight for your handbags – it is not worth your life!”
Anne Foley - Inner Wheel Club of Cupar The 5p Challenge
Some call them buttons; they fall out of your purse and disappear without trace under the furniture and you can never find one to make up that odd 5 of your £3.95 purchase!
BUT: Pat O Keefe, District Chairman of District 25 is doing the 5p challenge whereby we collect 5 pence coins in a bottle for Shooting Star Chase. This hospice is running a campaign to raise £50,000 to employ a full time senior nurse to care for babies, children and young people with life-limiting conditions and their families. She speaks about this challenge when she visits the clubs. At the Inner Wheel Club of Hove we collect our small change and the treasurer is keeping back all those 5 pence pieces to support this challenge. I even have a bottle in my house where I am collecting 5 pence pieces.
So how many 5 pence pieces must be collected to reach a target of £50,000? Quite a number!
