TURN TO P27 FOR TIPS ON USING REWARDS TO
BOOST PLEDGES CASE STUDY: ‘OFFERING UNIQUE REWARDS ENCOURAGED DONORS TO SUPPORT OUR PROJECT’
‘Appledore School has a major arts focus, so we decided the subject needed a permanent home. We set up the Harbour Arts Studio – for school and community use – during the 2017 summer term, using the space, furniture, skills and parental donations at our disposal. We wanted to fund specialist equipment to enhance the space, and crowdfunding seemed to be the perfect answer. Our target was £1,000 to purchase a kiln. We had a tight timeframe to execute the campaign, as the studio needed to be up and running for a summer school. A team ran the campaign, which we launched to a captive audience at our summer fayre. We plastered the village
home and posted updates on the school website. Social media was key, as regular updates kept supporters involved. Using the Crowdfunder platform
(
crowdfunder.co.uk) enabled us to offer donors rewards as an incentive. Each of our students made a clay boat, and the Year 6 children designed and printed limited-edition T-shirts. There was the option for donors’ handprints to go on our “many hands big and small” wall, and we encouraged businesses to pledge £100 by offering to display their logos in the studio and on our website. The response was amazing. We quickly
achieved our target, and surpassed our stretch target of £2,000 by the end of total of £2,137 from 73 supporters! We’ve now purchased a kiln, a potter’s
wheel, printing press and storage units. As a direct result of the campaign raising awareness of our project we also received a charity grant to pay for textiles equipment, and another from the council to develop the studio with bi-fold doors and a decking area. Each class uses the studio once a
week. External art clubs and community groups use it, too, with initiatives including a collaborative project with our arts ambassadors and clients from a local charity for adults with additional needs. We open it up to the school staff as well, with half-termly CPD sessions. We are now exploring ways to sustain funding for the studio, such as becoming a Community Interest Company.’ Kate Harvey, Art Teacher and Studio Coordinator, Appledore School, Bideford, Devon (250 pupils)
