was just writing the Around the Region report for the September issue of TEMPO, yet here we are again! I hope you all had wonderfully successful concerts during the busy December season and are continuing to make strides and meaningful connections with your students. In November, I had the opportunity to attend the senior voice recital of a former student of mine at Westminster Choir College. It’s always wonderful to see what our students accomplish after they leave our classrooms and to realize that what we do truly matters.
I CJMEA officially kicked off its
year with the High School Band, Choir, Orchestra, and Percussion Ensemble auditions on December 9th at JP Stevens High School. I’d like to thank our division chairs, Chris Vitale, Julianna LoBiondo, Arvin Gopal, and Yale Synder, as well as our band Audition Chair, Brian Toth and our choir Registration Manager, Barbara Retzko, for all of their hard work leading up to and on the day of auditions. So much goes on behind the scenes in order to ensure a smooth day for our directors and students. The CJMEA Board is grateful to everyone who assisted in any way during this event. Special thanks goes to Andrew Denicola, Matthew Lee, Brian Verdi, and

t’s hard to believe that we’re already more than four months into the school year. I feel like I
been very fortunate to have Anna Braun serve as our wonderful Webmaster for the past seven years. Anna has done incredible work keeping our website updated, proof reading forms and packets, and helping us to integrate on-line ticket sales. In No- vember, Anna notified the Board of her in- tention to resign from her position at the end of this school year. We’d like to have another person appointed soon so that he/ she can work with Anna for the remainder of this school year in order to learn our website and procedures. If you are inter- ested in serving as CJMEA’s Webmaster/ Communications Director, please send a letter of interest to
dwestawski@cjmea.org no later than January 15th. In an effort to assist with the profes-
sional development of music teachers in Region II, CJMEA will once again offer grants to teachers/music programs: • Grant awards will typically not exceed $750.
• Grant awards may be used to partially fund a project in conjunction with your school if we are not able to fully fund your proposed professional development.
• All checks will be written to a school account. We are unable to write checks directly to teachers, presenters, companies, music booster clubs, or other individuals/companies.
• Grants cannot be requested for the purchase of equipment or supplies unless it directly relates to the PD session being proposed.
The grant proposal form is available
on our website. We will continue to ap- prove grant requests until the funds allo- cated for this school year have been spent. It is a wonderful accomplishment to successfully audition into a Region Honors Group. It’s especially impressive

when students are able to do this four years in a row! This will be the 3rd year that we will offer three $1000 scholarships to graduating seniors who have been members of a region ensemble all four years of high school. The scholarship application is available on our website. Please encourage your seniors to apply for these scholarships.
CJMEA will once again hold a gen- eral membership meeting at the NJMEA conference in February. The Board and I look forward to seeing you then. In the meantime, please feel free to reach out to me or any other Board member if you have any questions or concerns. The con- tact information for every Board member is available on the website. We are here to promote a spirit of cooperation and fel- lowship among the music educators of this region and are always happy to hear from you.
