ready to continue your great work with the music students of New Jer- sey. The past few months have been busy for NJMEA and NAfME and there are some meetings and new initiatives I would like to make you aware of. My hope is to help all NJMEA members see how these ef- forts benefit music educators all over the country.

H

Eastern Division Meeting In October, the NAfME

Eastern Division held its Fall meet- ing in Pittsburgh. The focus of this meeting was to begin planning the 2019 Eastern Division Conference, and to meet with NAfME leadership about the latest news in music edu- cation on the national level. NJMEA President Elect Patrick O’Keefe and I were impressed with the conference plans presented by our neighbors in Pennsylvania and we encourage ev- eryone to attend the conference on April 3-7, 2019 in Pittsburgh, PA. NAfME President Denese Odegaard and CEO Michael Blakeslee were also in attendance and shared about NAfME efforts in advocating for funding of the Every Student Suc- ceeds Act (ESSA) as well as other

appy New Year! I hope you all had a restful holiday break and are

legislative priorities that affect mu- sic education. If you are interested in learning more about this, please check out the advocacy page at www. nafme.org.

NAfME Academy Recently, NAfME launched

its “NAfME Academy”, which is an online webinar-based professional development opportunity for teachers. The NAfME website describes it as “a brand new, state- of-the-art online learning platform for music educators. The Academy allows educators to access the relevant professional development they need to further enhance their teaching and serve the needs of students through dynamic and effective materials and learning opportunities.” I was able to see a demonstration of the Academy at the NAfME National Conference in November and I recommend it to all music educators as a valuable way to get PD and to stay current on trends and best practices. It’s also available to non-members as well so if you know a music teacher who is not a member, please encourage them to check it out. For those who may have a topic you feel may be of interest, there’s a link on the NAfME website to propose a webinar.

2 Amplify In November, NAfME

launched it’s new interactive dis- cussion platform, Amplify. This new membership benefit allows all NAfME members to be part of an online community with educators from all over the county. You should have received an email about this and I hope by the time you’re read- ing this many of you have already joined in on the conversation. If this is the first time you’re hearing about it, visit community.nafme.org to try it out.

Keep In Touch

As always, be on the look- out for information coming from NJMEA via TEMPO Express emails, the NJMEA website and so- cial media. Please reach out to me if you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions. Our organization is most successful when many educa- tors are involved!
